The Promised Land (radio)

The Promised Land is a public radio program created and hosted by Majora Carter. It is produced by Launch Productions and distributed by American Public Media, and is most often heard on public radio stations in the United States.

In 2008, Majora Carter and Marge Ostroushko co-produced the pilot episode of The Promised Land, which won a 3-way competition for a Corporation for Public Broadcasting Talent Quest <<link:0>>. The one-hour programs debuted on over 150 public radio stations across the US on January 19, 2009, and has since earned a 2010 Peabody Award.

The Promised Land (novel)

The Promised Land (Polish: Ziemia obiecana) is an 1899 novel by the Polish author and Nobel laureate, Władysław Reymont; first published in Warsaw. It is considered one of his most important works after The Peasants. The novel The Promised Land was originally published as installments in the industrial city of Łódź by the daily Kurier Codzienny in the years 1897 – 1898.

Set in Łódź, The Promised Land tells the story of three close friends and ruthless young industrialists: a Pole, a German, and a Jew struggling to build their own factory in the heartless world of the late 19th century labor exploitation. Reymont's novel vividly paints a portrait of the rapid industrialization of Łódź and its cruel effects on workers and mill owners. Reymont writes: "For that 'promised land' – for that tumor – villages were deserted, forests died out, the land was depleted of its treasures, the rivers dried up, people were born. And it sucked everything into itself. And in its powerful jaws it crushed and chewed up people and things, sky and earth, in return giving useless millions to a handful of people, and hunger and hardship to the whole throng."

Promised Land (1987 film)

Promised Land is a 1987 drama film written and directed by Michael Hoffman, and stars Kiefer Sutherland and Meg Ryan. It is set in Utah and is apparently based on a true story. It was the first film to be commissioned by the Sundance Film Festival, and uses the drama over economic class and manhood in order to offer a critique of the Reagan Administration.

Plot

The film opens following two American high school acquaintances a few years after graduation now suffering from deep anger and anguish because they are not as successful as they hoped to be. Hancock (Jason Gedrick) is the high school basketball star who gets into college on an athletic scholarship only to lose the scholarship to a better player. Unable to succeed in college based on his academic merit, he returns to his hometown, becomes a police officer and is slowly moving into a middle-class mediocrity with his cheerleader girlfriend, Mary, who is in college and plans to major in the arts. Hancock is still stewing over the fact that he is no longer the sports star and that his girlfriend is not only reluctant to marry him but may end up being more successful than he.

Promised Land (TV series)

Promised Land is an American drama series which aired on CBS from 1996 to 1999. It is a spin-off from another series, Touched by an Angel.

Plot

Promised Land features Russell (Gerald McRaney) and Claire Greene (Wendy Phillips) as husband and wife who, with their son Josh (Austin O'Brien), daughter Dinah (Sarah Schaub), and nephew Nathaniel (Eddie Karr), traveled the United States pulling their Airstream trailer. Claire homeschooled the three children. Film veteran Celeste Holm also starred as Hattie, Russell's mother.

Much of the third season was spent in Denver, Colorado, but — much like Touched by an Angel — it was filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"Promised Land" is an episode of The Outer Limits television show. It was first broadcast on August 21, 1998, during the show's fourth season. It is a sequel to "The Camp" episode.

Plot

This episode is a sequel to The Camp. Years ago the Tsal-Khan race arrived on earth which led to a bitter war of conquest with the humans. Dlavan (Rene Auberjonois) and his family are Tsal-Khan, offspring of the handful of aliens who remained on Earth after the war. Today they live on a tightly guarded farm where they must grow all their own food, since their forebears poisoned all the plants during the war with mankind. Most of the aliens believe that the human race was wiped out in the war, but there is a group of humans in the woods near the farm. This group, led by Rebecca (Caroline Goodall), escaped from the alien's robot run camps. The group also includes David (Joseph Kell), Ruth (Jane Sowerby) and the mute, orphaned child Tali (Jessica Harmon). They are desperately hungry and have seen their children die from eating poisoned fruit. So, when they spot Dlavan's grandson Ma'al, wandering in the woods, they follow him home to the farm. After they see the well-fed aliens, Rebecca leads the group to raid the farm for food. At first, Tali figures out how to get around the farm's deadly defensive measures. But, things escalate and individuals are hurt and killed on both sides. When Rebecca captures an alien weapon and Tali is seriously injured, the scene is set for the final showdown, a battle that could destroy both groups. Ultimately Rebecca realizes the aliens are only caring for their families and after they heal Tali she chooses to live in peace with them

The Promised is a Simple Minds' compilation album released in 1997 by Virgin Records.

The track selection of the album is similar to the group's former compilation Glittering Prize 81/92. It omits "Love Song", "All the Things She Said", and "Ghost Dancing" but includes "New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84)" and their two most recent singles from Good News from the Next World which was their final album for Virgin Records.
