The Passions were a British post-punk band which formed in 1978 and disbanded in 1983. They were considered one-hit wonders due to their early 1981 single "I'm in Love with a German Film Star".
Based in Shepherds Bush, west London, The Passions' music was grounded mainly in Barbara Gogan's voice and Clive Timperley's delicate Echoplex guitar work. Before forming in 1978, most of the Passions' members had played in other groups. Timperley was formerly with the 101ers, while drummer Richard Williams and singer/guitarist Barbara Gogan were in the punk rock outfit The Derelicts. The Passions' first single, issued in March 1979, was "Needles and Pills" (written by Dack Dyde), which assisted in gaining the band a recording contract with Fiction Records.
Michael & Miranda, the band's debut album, was released in 1980. Singles "Hunted" and "The Swimmer" were followed by their major charting song, "I'm in Love with a German Film Star". Before "The Swimmer" was issued, Bidwell and Barker left the band, the former joining The Wall. David Agar took over bass guitar duties. The band's second album, 30,000 Feet Over China, was released in August 1981, including previously released A-sides and several brand new recordings.
The Passion Play or Easter pageant is a dramatic presentation depicting the Passion of Jesus Christ: his trial, suffering and death. It is a traditional part of Lent in several Christian denominations, particularly in Catholic tradition.
The development of the Passion Play was about the same as that of the Easter Drama. It originated in the ritual of the Church, which prescribes, among other things, that the Gospel on Good Friday should be sung in parts divided among various persons. Later on, the Passion Play made its appearance, first in Latin, then in vernacular languages; contents and forms were adapted more and more to audience expectations, until, in the fifteenth century, the popular religious plays had developed. Thus, the Benedictbeurn Passion Play (thirteenth century) is still largely composed of Latin ritual sentences in prose and of church hymns, and, being designed to be sung, resembles an oratorio.
Passion Play is a 2010 American drama film written and directed by Mitch Glazer, executive produced by Rebecca Wang and starring Mickey Rourke, Megan Fox, Rhys Ifans and Bill Murray. Filming for the production began in December 2009 and is presented by Rebecca Wang Entertainment. It premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.
Nate (Mickey Rourke), a small-time jazz musician and recovering heroin addict, is clearly a hard-luck case. After a performance one night, he is mugged and bound. He awakens to find himself in a vehicle and being driven out into the desert, but he is helpless to do anything about it. His assailant then walks Nate away from the car, and is about to kill him, but instead the assailant is shot dead by a band of Native Americans, and Nate is left unharmed. Nate wanders around in the desert and climbs a mountain, where he looks down upon a carnival and sideshow. He walks through the carnival, asking the owner to use a telephone, and he wanders among the fire eaters, sword swallowers, and other performers. Nate finds himself drawn to the exotic beauty of Lily (Megan Fox), a freak performer who has wings on her back. Lily is cold and dismissive, but it dawns on her that this gentle giant may well be her ticket to a better life. The sideshow owner (Rhys Ifans) attempts to kill Nate, but Lily rescues him by stealing a truck, and together they flee to the city.
The fear of a daughter runs high
In the mind of a father to be
For something is growing inside
But we don't talk about it, do we?
In the long empty passionless night
Many times to herself she has prayed
That the baby will love her much more
Than the big boy who stole her away
And sometimes it takes
A grown man a long time to learn
Just what it would take
A child a night to learn
And sometimes it takes
A grown man a long time to learn
Just what it would take
A child a night to learn
It pains her to learn
That some things will never be right
If the baby is just
Someone else to take sides in a fight
Harsh words between bride and groom
The distance is greater each day
He smokes alone in the next room
And she knits her life away
And sometimes it takes
A grown man a long time to learn
Just what it would take
A child a night to learn
And sometimes it takes
A grown man a long time to learn
Just what it would take
A child a night to learn
A long time ago
She saw visions on the stairs
And when she felt dizzy
Her mother was always there
The home help is no help at all
I have not committed a crime
Angels gaze down from the wall
