Leeds Beckett Students' Union

Leeds Beckett Students' Union (formerly Leeds Met Students' Union) is the university-wide representative body for students at Leeds Beckett University, England. It exists to represent Leeds Beckett students in University decision-making, to act as the voice of students in the national higher education policy debate, and to provide direct services to the student body. In 2012, it was voted the second best Students' Union in the city of Leeds and 39th nationally.

The executive committee

The executive committee of Leeds Beckett Students' Union carries out the decisions of the Board of Trustees, General Meetings and Student Council. The committee is composed of the full and part-time officers, each covering a specific area of the running of the Union and of the student experience.

Equality & diversity officers

In 2012, Leeds Beckett Students' Union became one of the first Students' Unions in the country to introduce paid liberation officers. This decision contributed to the Students' Union winning the NUS Equality & Diversity Award that year. After three years, following a majority vote of the democratically elected Student Council, the decision was made to introduce a full-time paid Vice President Equality & Diversity in recognition of the importance of delivering meaningful change in the area of Equality & Diversity. The work of this role will support and be directed by a number of liberation reps (i.e Women's, LGBTQ, etc) on Student Council to ensure that campaigns are always led by the students to whom the matter affects.

The Met (skyscraper)

The Met is a 69 storey condominium located in Bangkok. It is the fifth tallest building and second tallest residential building in Thailand.

The Met has a height of 228 metres and 69 floors. It contains 370 condominium units. It is composed of six towers connected by sky bridges. Sunshades, overhangs, and walls of live greenery filter sunlight and protect interiors from overheating. The gaps between the towers contain terraces with pools and sky gardens. The staggered blocks of the structure's mass are oriented to let the sun pass through the building on its regular course. The apertures through this building are meant to increase the strength of passing breezes and to cool the living units. The architects conceived of this building as a model for high-rise construction in a low-wind tropical climate, reworking the worldwide model developed for cold climates with high winds.

The Met has won the 2009 Bronze Emporis Skyscraper Award. WOHA, the architectural firm, won the Singapore President's Design Award - Design of the Year 2009 for The Met. In 2010 the Met won the German "The International Highrise Award" and was cited for "sustainable living conditions in this tropical region without recourse to air conditioning". The building was the RIBA 2011 Lubetkin Prize winner.
