The Locust
The Locust is a musical group from San Diego, California, United States known for their unique mix of grindcore speed and aggression, complexity, and new wave weirdness.
Style
Originally a powerviolence band with a strong tendency towards synth-based passages, they have more recently stripped down much of their past sound, but retained the heavy distortion, synthesizers, screamed vocals, and intense stage presence. About the band's aesthetic, singer/bassist Justin Pearson has said, "I wanted to change the way people perceive music, or maybe just destroy it in general." The Locust's music is complex, dynamic and fast-paced, often featuring abrupt and inconsistent time-signature changes. These erratic elements are, according to guitarist Bobby Bray, "a reflection of perhaps how our brains have to function in order to be able to do anything in the Western societies we live in."
History
The Locust was formed in 1994 by Justin Pearson, Bobby Bray, Dylan Scharf, Dave Warshaw, and Dave Astor. After a number of personnel changes, they arrived at the current four-piece lineup in 2001. Their music was featured in John Waters's film Cecil B. Demented. The group has solicited remixes from Bastard Noise, Christoph de Babalon, Kid606, and I Am Spoonbender. The Locust performed at ATP's I'll Be Your Mirror festival on May 4, 2013, at Alexandra Palace in London.
Locust (comics)
The Locust was a one-time supervillain foe of the X-Men.
Publication history
The Locust made his debut in X-Men #24 in September 1966, and was created by Roy Thomas and Werner Roth.
The character subsequently appears in The Uncanny X-Men #72 (October 1971), The Incredible Hulk #194 (December 1975), X-Factor #52 (March 1990), and The Order #4 (July 2002).
The Locust received an entry in the All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z #6 (2006).
Fictional character biography
The Locust's alter ego is Doctor August Hopper, once a top name in entomology, whose "crackpot theories" cost him his job. He relocated to Ryan Chemicals, where he developed a Magno-Ray which causes insects to grow to enormous sizes and allows him to control their actions. He sends an army of raging locusts, grasshoppers, wasps, and beetles to overthrow the world, but is eventually thwarted by the X-Men and surrenders to the authorities.
Locust attacked his daughter's fiancee, but was stopped by the Hulk.
The Locust (EP)
The Locust is the third release by The Locust. It was released on Gold Standard Laboratories in March 1997.
The Locust is The Locust's first recording that relies heavily on keyboards and synthesizers, combined with their powerviolence style, influenced mainly by Crossed Out. This is the sound for which The Locust has since become known.
In 2004, the EP was remastered and re-issued on 3" CD and 7" vinyl, and included two bonus tracks.
