Animal husbandry is the management and care of farm animals by humans, in which genetic qualities and behavior, considered to be advantageous to humans, are further developed. The term can refer to the practice of selectively breeding and raising livestock to promote desirable traits in animals for utility, sport, pleasure, or research.
Animal husbandry has been practiced for thousands of years since the first domestication of animals. Selective breeding for desired traits was first established as a scientific practice by Robert Bakewell during the British Agricultural Revolution in the 18th century. One of his most important breeding programs was with sheep. Using native stock, he was able to quickly select for large, yet fine-boned sheep, with long, lustrous wool. The Lincoln Longwool was improved by Bakewell and in turn the Lincoln was used to develop the subsequent breed, named the New (or Dishley) Leicester. It was hornless and had a square, meaty body with straight top lines. These sheep were exported widely and have contributed to numerous modern breeds.
Animal husbandry in Himachal Pradesh plays a very major role in the development of agricultural sector of Himachal. Indigenous breeds of cows, buffalo and sheep are of very poor quality.
Numerous schemes for cattle development, cattle health and disease resistance in wood production, poultry development, feed and fodder development, dairy improvement, milk supply schemes and veterinary education has been undertaken in order to improve the livestock in the state. There are many veterinary hospitals, dispensaries and outlying dispensaries in the state to provide veterinary aids and to take measures against various contagious diseases. A number of mobile dispensaries are also in operation.
Recently, Angora rabbits imported from West Germany were introduced in the state. Now 7 units for their propagation have been set up in Kangra.
Milk production has also increased. Milk chilling plants with a capacity of about 55,000 liters have been set up at about 24 places and departmental milk supply schemes are operational in 6 towns.
Animal Husbandry (Polish: Hodowla zwierzątek) is a dice game invented and published by the Polish mathematician Karol Borsuk at his own expense in 1943, during the German occupation of Warsaw. Sales of the game were a way for Borsuk to support his family after he lost his job following the closure by the German occupation authorities of Warsaw University. The original sets were produced by hand by Borsuk's wife, Zofia. The author of the drawings of animals was Janina Borsuk née Śliwicka. The game was one of the first in the world to feature 12-sided dice.
The game achieved great popularity, first among friends of the family and then among wider circles of friends and strangers. However, for decades, all copies were thought to have been lost during the Warsaw Uprising and the aftermath of post-war chaos in Poland. But in the 1990s, a surviving set was found intact – and with the permission of the Borsuk family, and on the occasion of Borsuk's 90th birthday and the 15th anniversary of his death it was re-introduced into the Polish market under the title Superfarmer by the publisher GRANNA sp. In 2010 the original game was re-issued under the original title and with original graphics for the Warsaw Rising Museum and is available in its gift shop. The new edition was one of the items featured at the 1 Euro Design exhibition at Warsaw's Institute of Industrial Design.
Come On Pilgrim is the debut mini-LP release by the American alternative rock band Pixies. Produced by Gary Smith, the album was released in September 1987 by 4AD.
In March 1987, Pixies (Black Francis, guitar/lead vocals; Kim Deal, bass/vocals; Joey Santiago, guitar; David Lovering, drums), entered Boston's Fort Apache Studios with Fort Apache owner/record producer Gary Smith to record a demo tape. The resulting 17-song cassette, later dubbed "The Purple Tape" eventually found its way to Ivo Watts-Russell, president and co-founder of the influential British record label 4AD. Pixies' manager, Ken Goes, was also the manager of Throwing Muses, who had become the first American band to sign to 4AD a year earlier. Despite being initially unimpressed by the demo, Watts-Russell was urged to sign the band by his girlfriend, a secretary for 4AD. After her insistence, he walked the streets of New York listening to The Purple Tape on his Walkman and, in his words, finally "got it."
A year's gone by since these streets were covered in white
Have you ever thought of me since that cold winter night?
My hands are shaking as I reach out for yours
Am I holding onto something I've already lost?
How did we get here?
Why did it turn out this way?
After all the years we threw away
And you're alone this Christmas Eve
I hope it burns every time you think of me
I start a fire, try to forget you
I hope you're locked up in your room
Forgetting about me
We light a candle to put in the window
A year's gone by since these streets were covered in white
Have you ever thought of me since that cold winter night?
And I hope it hurt for you half as much as it's hurt for me
I've never made you promises I didn't mean to keep
And it's the 25th of December
And I remember the times
The times I felt alive (didn't you feel alive?)
We paint on all of our smiles (all of our smiles)
And pretend that I'll see you tomorrow
But I was never good enough for you
A year's gone by since these streets were covered in white
Have you ever thought of me since that cold winter night?
And I hope it hurt for you half as much as it's hurt for me
I've never made you promises I didn't mean to keep
But it's cold outside
And these feelings have been dying for you
But I am stuck inside
With the evidence of us that you left behind
A year's gone by since these streets were covered in white
Have you ever thought of me since that cold winter night?
And I hope it hurt for you half as much as it's hurt for me
