"The Great Beyond" is a song by R.E.M. It is not featured on an original studio album as it was written specifically for the 1999 movie Man on the Moon but was released as a single the following year for support of the film's soundtrack album. The single reached #3 in the UK singles chart, the band's highest ever placing in that country. The unedited version is included in two R.E.M. compilations: In Time - The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 and Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982–2011. On the Man on the Moon soundtrack, there is some dialogue from the movie at the end of the track; meanwhile, the single version is a radio edit, with the bridge omitted.
In the unedited version, at 4:09 and at 4:26, the listener can hear Michael Stipe singing the following lines in the background: "Here's a little agit for the never-believer, here's a little ghost for the offering". Both lines were taken from the 1992 R.E.M. song "Man on the Moon", also about Andy Kaufman, from which the movie took its title.
Cruise of the Gods was a one-off comedy/drama produced by Baby Cow Productions for the BBC. It starred Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan, David Walliams and James Corden. It aired in 2002 and has since been released on BBC DVD.
Written by Tim Firth, with additional material by Michael Marshall Smith and Peter Baynham, it told the story of a fan cruise held in honour of The Children of Castor, a fictitious 1980s post-apocalyptic sci-fi TV series, starring Andy Van Allen (Brydon) and Nick Lee (Coogan). Twenty years after the show's cancellation, Van Allen is the reluctant special guest on the fan cruise. For Van Allen, The Children of Castor was the height of his fame, whilst Lee went on to bigger and better things, currently Sherlock Holmes in Miami.
Brian Conley and Jack Jones made cameo appearances as themselves.
A film based on the TV show is being remade, David Guion and Michael Handelman are attached to the project to write and direct the film. The remake is titled as The Great Beyond.
Oh why
Don't it make you cry?
Something so clear as love
Could become so vague
And it don't matter what we do
And it don't matter what we say
Without surrender we will never
Find our way
Disengage and leave the ground
Setting my sights on the great beyond
Silence is the loudest sound
I can't believe it, it's so beautiful
I was lost but now I'm found
Settimg my sights on the great beyond
Disengage and leave the ground
Oh why
Don't it make you cry?
Something so clear as joy
Could fade into grey
And it don't matter anymore
When what you wanna buy ain't in the store
Sometimes you gotta write your own songs
When you wanna sing, sing
There ain't no reason why
We can't fly
We can't fly
There ain't no gravity girl
In my mind
Not tonight
