The Free Press (University of Southern Maine)

The Free Press is the official campus newspaper of the University of Southern Maine. It publishes a print edition weekly during the academic year, equaling roughly 22 editions a year. The newspaper has a circulation of 3,000 and publishes daily on their website.

History and Organization

In 2012, the Free Press began a partnership with the Bangor Daily News to provide training, web hosting and development services for paper, as well as a content-sharing agreement aimed at promoting the best in student journalism in Maine.

Controversies

In 2001, the Free Press gained access to the campus police log despite opposition from the local police department.

In April 2002, the USM Student Senate sought to dissolve the Student Communications Board, which had been created as a buffer between the university and the paper to ensure funding to the organization. A referendum was held on whether to dissolve the board and it lost with 16% of the vote.

Awards

In 2000, the newspaper was ranked third in their region for "Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper Newspaper", while writer Steve Peoples was ranked for "General News Reporting" for his story, "Students' Voting Rights in Jeopardy". In 2002, several students involved with the newspaper won recognition by the Society of Professional Journalists for their region, including the top awards for Spot News Photography and General News Photography.

The Free Press (Mankato)

The Free Press is a daily newspaper published in Mankato, Minnesota.

History

On April 4, 1887, Editor L.P. Hunt published the first issue of the Mankato Daily Free Press and found it was not easy. In an apology to his readers, Hunt wrote "The labor incident to getting out the initial number of a daily paper is vastly more trying than people not familiar with newspaper work and worry are aware of or can be devised of. The fact, therefore, that today's Daily Free Press is decidedly short on telegraphic, as well as some other matter, is no exception to the perplexities experienced by newspaper men and we feel sure the public will bear with us a day or two until the 'mercheen' is fairly oiled and put in good running order." Since that time, the 'mercheen' hasn't skipped a beat publishing more than 100 years serving the Mankato region.

The seminal publication actually was the Independent which began in 1857. Six years later, it was bought by Charles Slocum and named the Mankato Union. Then in 1880 the Union and its rival Mankato paper, the Record, merged and became the Mankato Weekly Free Press. It ran as a weekly until 1887, when it became a daily. It began as a conservative Republican newspaper remaining that way until modern days. The word "Daily" was dropped from its name in 1940 and 30 years later, "Mankato" was dropped.

Free Press (publisher)

Free Press was a book publishing imprint of Simon & Schuster. It was one of the best-known imprints specializing in serious nonfiction. In 2012, it ceased to exist as a distinct imprint entity and merged into Simon & Schuster, the company's flagship imprint; however, some books would still be published using the Free Press imprimatur.

History

Free Press was founded by Jeremiah Kaplan (1926–1993) and Charles Liebman in 1947 and was devoted to sociology and religion titles. They chose the name Free Press because they wanted to print books devoted to civil liberties. It was launched with three classic titles: Division of Labor by Emile Durkheim, The Theory of Economic and Social Organization by Max Weber and The Scientific Outlook by Bertrand Russell. It was headquartered in Glencoe, Illinois, where it was known as The Free Press of Glencoe. In 1960, Kaplan was recruited by Macmillan to provide new editorial leadership and he agreed to move to New York if Macmillan Publishing Company would buy Free Press, and thus Free Press was sold in 1960 for $1.3 million ($500,000 going to Kaplan and $800,000 going to Liebman). In 1994, Simon & Schuster acquired Macmillan and Free Press. In 2012, it was announced that Free Press would cease to exist as a distinct entity and would be merged into Simon & Schuster, the company's flagship imprint. "We plan to continue publishing thought leaders and other important cultural voices under the Free Press imprimatur, while also introducing many other Free Press authors, such as novelists and historians and business writers, to the flagship Simon & Schuster imprint."

Free Press (magazine)

Free Press was a short-lived but well-attempted and widely circulated, monthly magazine in Malayalam language published from Dehli between 2003 and 2006. At 23, Vinod K. Jose became one of the youngest editor-in-chiefs of any current affairs registered magazine in India when he started Free Press.Free Press was the first publication to have initiated the concept of citizen journalism in Kerala.

Free Press was founded by Vinod Jose, while working as a foreign correspondent in South Asia for the United States based Pacifica Radio. Funding itself on readers' contribution, Free Press exhibited the idealism of a group of twenty young journalists, who came together to publish an investigative, non-partisan monthly in Malayalam published from Delhi, targeting the Malayalis in Kerala and the Malayali diaspora in other Indian states and abroad. Free Press was a registered magazine with the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) and sold 55,000 copies every month. Without spending any money on advertisement, Free Press gained the circulation through word-of-mouth campaign and conducting smaller events in Kerala.

Free Press (organization)

Free Press is a progressive lobbying group that advocates for increased government oversight of Internet Service Providers. The organization is a major supporter of net neutrality.

Free Press was co-founded in 2003 by Robert W. McChesney, John Nichols, and Josh Silver. Craig Aaron is Free Press' current president and CEO, and Kimberly Longey is the COO. Its board chair is Ben Scott.

The group has an annual budget of over $5 million. Donors have include George Soros and Barbra Streisand. Free Press is an "activist group that promotes Internet openness" via nationwide grassroots activism and lobbying activity.

Activities

Free Press opposes media mergers that create monopolies. Free Press opposed the Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger and hailed Comcast's decision to drop its merger bid in the face of increased government scrutiny. Free Press President and CEO Craig Aaron "credited the government regulators 'who have listened to the public and are seriously working to increase competition and lower the costs of access.'" In 2011, Free Press pushed AT&T to abandon its bid to take over T-Mobile.
