Early life [link]

Cardle was born in Southampton, Hampshire, to David and Jennifer Cardle[1] (née Horner)[3] on 15 April 1983.[1] His family lived in Bristol before moving to Essex.[1] He attended the independent Stoke College in Suffolk,[4] then the Institute in Colchester.

Career [link]

In 2005 he was a member of the alternative rock / pop band Darwyn and recorded an 11 track album When You Wake and the follow-up EP Little Sunlight in 2006.[5][6][7] In 2009, he became the frontman and guitarist of a rock band called Seven Summers.[8] They performed live on Sue Marchant's BBC radio program on 8 December 2009 and released a self-titled album on 22 January 2010.[9]

[edit] 2010: The X Factor

In 2010, Cardle auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor, singing Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good".[10] His mentor was Dannii Minogue, who mentored him until the final when he was announced the winner on 12 December 2010, after receiving 44.61% of the vote.[11][12] Cardle received the most votes every week from week 2, being beaten only by Mary Byrne in week 1.[13] The week after the series final, Cardle's cover of "Many of Horror," originally recorded by Scottish rock trio Biffy Clyro, topped the UK Singles Chart to become the Christmas number 1 and remained there for three consecutive weeks.[14] The song was nominated in the Best British Single category at the 2011 BRIT Awards.[15]

2011-present [link]

On 15 March 2011, it was reported that Cardle has signed a record deal with Syco Music in a joint venture with Columbia Records, becoming the first The X Factor winner not to be exclusively signed to Simon Cowell's label.[16]

On 18 August 2011, Cardle revealed that his debut album, Letters, would be released in the UK on 17 October 2011. Whilst working on the album Cardle collaborated with various writers including Eg White.[17]

The first single "Run for Your Life" had its first radio play on 5 September 2011 on BBC Radio 1, ahead of its release on 9 October. Upon release and an X Factor return performance, "Run for Your Life" debuted at number 6 on the UK Top 40 Chart the week ending 16 October. Letters debuted at number 2 on the UK Albums chart and spent 16 consecutive weeks in the top 40.[18]

On 20 May 2012 Cardle announced on Twitter that he had "parted ways" with Columbia Records. The label declined to comment. [19][20]

The album received wide positive response from critics, who complimented Cardle's voice, songwriting and harder sound. It was also a commercial success, debuting at number eight on both the British and Scottish album charts. It has sold over 60,000 copies in the UK giving it a Silver certification.

Background

On 20 May 2012, Cardle announced on Twitter that he had "parted ways" with Columbia Records and Syco Music, stating musical differences as the reason for the departure. On 9 September 2012, Cardle announced that he had signed with So What Recordings, part of the Silva Screen Music Group. The same day, he announced that his second album, The Fire, would be released on 29 October 2012. The lead single from the album, "It's Only Love," was also confirmed for release on 29 October 2012. He has stated that he had offers from various record labels but decided to go with the independent over a major one to have more control: "The other major labels that were interested, they were offering a similar thing to Sony, and I really wanted to have as much control as I could. So (So What Recordings) offered just as much support in every other way that a major label would, but I get to have control, which I plan to keep."
