The Fauves are an Australian rock band formed in 1988. The band are known for their witty lyrics, melodic pop-rock and often satirical or evocative exploration of Australian themes.
Their album Future Spa was nominated for Best Alternative Album in the 1997 ARIA awards but lost to Spiderbait's Ivy and the Big Apples. They played at the Big Day Out in both 1993 and 1997.
In 2007 they played their 1000th Show and in 2008 they celebrated their 20th Anniversary Gig at The Espy in Melbourne.
The band was formed in 1988 by four school friends from Mt Eliza High School on the Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne. The initial line-up consisted of: Andrew Cox (guitar, vocals), Philip Leonard (guitar, vocals, brass), Andrew Dyer (bass) and Adam Newey (drums). The band took its name from the short-lived French art movement Fauvism which was characterised by both its intensity and infatuation with colour.
In 1990 the band released a 5 track 12" vinyl only EP This Mood Has Passed, as well as a 7" vinyl only single Fireman 451 / Daughter Abroad. In 1992 the band released 2 six-track CD EPs on Shock Records, The Scissors Within and Tight White Ballhugger.
The Fauves is the seventh studio album by Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne indie band The Fauves.
The album is notable for its brevity and the fact that it only contains three songs by Phil Leonard ("The Doctor").
(all songs by The Fauves)
Lying in my bed, I think of you
That song goes through my head, the one we both knew
In each line lies another line full of sacred sound
But you're outside where the companies dream and the money goes round
Lying in my bed.
Watching my mistakes,
I listen to the band they said that it could be the 2 of us
The snow might fall and write the lines on the silent page
But you're outside making permanent love to the nuclear age
Two silhouettes by the cash machine make a lovers dance
It's a tango for the lonely wives of the business class
Lying in my bed
Watching my mistakes
I listen to the band
Lying in my bed
With nothing much to say so I listen to the man
He said that it could be the 2 of us
I heard you call from across the city through the stereo sound
And so I crawled there sickeningly pretty as the money went round
Lying in my head watching my mistakes
I listen to the band
And the drums beat in my head
Pianos chime the sound in this prison of the house
And as the illness comes again can you hear me through the rain
As I listen to the band?
As I sing the silent song
Mime each lonely word
Please listen to the man he said that it could be the 2 of us
Alone but not lonely, you and me
