The exchange (chess)

The exchange in chess refers to a situation in which one player loses a minor piece (i.e. a bishop or knight) but captures the opponent's rook. The side which wins the rook is said to have won the exchange, while the other player has lost the exchange, since the rook is usually more valuable. Alternatively, the side that has won the rook is up the exchange, and the other player is down the exchange. The opposing captures often happen on consecutive moves, although this is not strictly necessary. It is generally detrimental to lose the exchange, although occasionally one may find reason to purposely do so; the result is an exchange sacrifice (see below). The minor exchange is an uncommon term for the exchange of a bishop and knight.

Note that the exchange differs from the more general "exchange" or "an exchange", which refers to the loss and subsequent gain of arbitrary pieces, for example to "exchange queens" would mean that each side's queen is captured.

The Exchange (TV series)

The Exchange (formerly The Lang and O'Leary Exchange) is a Canadian business news television series, which airs weekdays on CBC Television and CBC News Network. The series presents a summary of the day's major business stories in a manner similar to Lang and O'Leary's earlier Business News Network series SqueezePlay.

The show originally aired as a half-hour daily series hosted by CBC's senior business correspondent Amanda Lang and formerly co-hosted by entrepreneur/investor Kevin O'Leary, starting at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. As of March 1, 2010 The Lang and O'Leary Exchange became an hour-long show starting at 7 p.m., pre-taped earlier in the evening, and aired on the CBC News Network. In September 2012, the show was revised into two half-hour formats, and gained an airing at 6:30 p.m. local time for the first half hour on CBC Television following local newscasts. That format featured the Big Three in the first half hour, and the top two in its second half hour.

Guest hosts, when Lang or O'Leary have been absent, have included Rudyard Griffiths, Bruce Sellery, Preet Banerjee, Som Seif, Mike Abramsky, Dianne Buckner, Danielle Bochove, Michael Hyatt, David Chilton and David Kaufman.
