Robin Cook

Robert Finlayson Cook (28 February 1946 – 6 August 2005) was a British Labour Party politician, who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Livingston from 1983 until his death, and served in the Cabinet as Foreign Secretary from 1997 to 2001.

He studied at the University of Edinburgh before becoming a Member of Parliament for Edinburgh Central in 1974. In parliament he was known for his debating ability which saw his rise through the political ranks and ultimately to the Cabinet.

He resigned from his positions as Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons on 17 March 2003 in protest against the invasion of Iraq. At the time of his death, he was President of the Foreign Policy Centre and a vice-president of the America All Party Parliamentary Group and the Global Security and Non-Proliferation All Party Parliamentary Group.

Early life

Robin Cook was born in the County Hospital, Bellshill, Scotland, the only son of Peter and Christina Cook (née Lynch). His father was a chemistry teacher who grew up in Fraserburgh, and his grandfather was a miner before being blacklisted for being involved in a strike.

Robin Cook (American novelist)

Robert Brian "Robin" Cook (born May 4, 1940, in New York City) is an American physician and novelist who writes about medicine and topics affecting public health.

He is best known for combining medical writing with the thriller genre. Many of his books have been bestsellers on the New York Times Bestseller List. Several of his books have also been featured in Reader's Digest. His books have sold nearly 400 million copies worldwide .

Biography

Early life and career

Cook grew up in Queens, New York, and moved to Leonia, New Jersey, when he was eight, where he could first have the "luxury" of having his own room. He graduated from Wesleyan University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and finished his postgraduate medical training at Harvard.

Cook ran the Cousteau Society's blood-gas lab in the south of France. He later became an aquanaut (a submarine doc) with the U.S. Navy's SEALAB program when he was drafted in 1969. Cook served in the Navy from 1969 to 1971, reaching the rank of lieutenant commander. He wrote his first novel, The Year of the Intern, while serving on the Polaris submarine USS Kamehameha.

Derek Raymond

Robert William Arthur Cook (12 June 1931 – 30 July 1994), better known since the 1980s by his pen name Derek Raymond, was an English crime writer, credited with being a founder of British noir.

Biography

Early life

The eldest son of a textile magnate, Cook spent his early years at the family’s London house, off Baker Street, tormenting a series of nannies. In 1937, in anticipation of the Second World War, the family retreated to the countryside, to a house near their Kentish castle. In 1944 Cook went to Eton, which he later characterized as a “hotbed of buggery” and “an excellent preparation for vice of any kind”. He dropped out at the age of 17. During his National Service, Cook attained the rank of corporal (latrines). After a brief stint working for the family business, selling lingerie in a department store in Neath, Wales, he spent most of the 1950s abroad. He lived in the Beat Hotel in Paris, rubbing shoulders with his neighbours William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, and danced at fashionable left bank boîtes with the likes of Juliette Greco. In New York he resided on the Lower East Side and was married to an heiress from New England for all of sixty-five days. He claimed that he was sick of the dead-on-its-feet upper crust he was born into, that he didn’t believe in and didn’t want, whose values were meaningless. He was seeking to carve his way out — “Crime was the only chisel I could find.” Cook smuggled oil paintings to Amsterdam, drove fast cars into Spain from Gibraltar, and consummated his downward mobility by spending time in a Spanish jail for sounding off about Francisco Franco in his local bar.

Unfair: The End

Unfair: The End (アンフェア　the end) is a 2015 Japanese police drama thriller film based on the Japanese television drama series Unfair. It follows two other films based on the series, Unfair: The Movie (2007) and Unfair 2: The Answer (2011). The film is directed by Shimako Satō, who also directed the previous film, with Ryoko Shinohara reprising her role from the series and films. It was released on September 5, 2015.

    Box office

    The film was number-one at the Japanese box office on its opening weekend by number of admissions, with 214,000, and was second place by gross renevue, with ¥295 million. On its second weekend it earned ¥191 million and again placed second by gross revenue. By September 29, it had earned ¥1.79 billion.

    KHTB

    KHTB (101.9 FM) is a Salt Lake City, Utah-based radio station. The station's studios are located in South Salt Lake (behind the I-15/I-80 interchange) and its transmitter site is located southwest of the city on Farnsworth Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains.

    History of KKAT

    In 1995, KKAT licensed "Young Country" from Alliance Broadcasting. It was the first country station to intentionally go after young listeners. Also that year, Kid Cassidy (John Potter) of KWNR replaced Gary and Scotty in the mornings, with Insane Rick Shane remaining as producer. Other local hosts were T.J. Evans, "Gentleman Jim" Mickleson, Bob Wells and Tracy Chapman, while Blair Garner did the overnight shift. KKAT took over the number one position among five country stations from KSOP-FM, the only station in the group to lose listeners. Gary and Scotty had been hired to replace Ken Simmons after Simmons' arrest for lewd behavior, and the station and the morning hosts could not overcome the stigma of that incident. But hiring Cassidy and a strong promotional effort worked. KKAT would be replaced by KPQP, a Top 40 station, in 2004. KPQP would last until KENZ's move to the frequency in late 2005.

    The End...

    The End... is the fourth studio album by Nico. It was released in November 1974, through record label Island.

    Background

    The End... is her fifth collaboration with John Cale and second with him as producer. It carries the same harmonium-based sound heard on The Marble Index (1969) and Desertshore (1970), with the addition of Brian Eno's synthesizers and electronic instruments.

    The song "You Forget to Answer" tells of the misery felt by Nico when she failed to reach ex-lover Jim Morrison by phone only to find out later that he had died. All but two of the songs on the album were written by Nico: the cover of The Doors' "The End" and a version of the German national anthem "Das Lied der Deutschen". Brian Eno performs synthesizer on "It Has Not Taken Long", "You Forgot to Answer" and "Innocent and Vain".

    The front and back covers feature stills from the Philippe Garrel film Les hautes solitudes (1974) in which Nico appears.

    Jonas Ekfeldt

    Jonas Ekfeldt is a Swedish music producer and singer. Won acclaim in 1996 using the name Robin Cook and the breakthrough single "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down" (a cover of Nik Kershaw's debut "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me") followed by "Comanchero" and the album Land of Sunshine in 1997.

    Ekfeldt sang and produced "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down" and all subsequent releases under the name Robin Cook, but appointed Manuel Manci to front and perform, thinking he himself lacked time. The truth of who really was the singer was kept secret until Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet ran an article in 2002. Yet another single was released in 2002 under the name Robin Cook, titled "Susanna" with Ekfeldt on the cover.

    Ekfeldt filed a lawsuit against, and won over, Sveriges Radio for sampling "I Won't Let the Sun Go Down".
