24 (season 1)

The first season of the American drama television series 24, also known as Day 1, was first broadcast from November 6, 2001, to May 21, 2002 on Fox. The season's storyline starts and ends at 12:00 a.m. on the day of the California presidential primary.

Season overview

The first season takes place on the day of a fictional U.S. presidential primary.

The season's main plot revolves around an assassination attempt on U.S. Senator from Maryland, David Palmer, a candidate for the Democratic Party presidential nomination, on the day of the primary in California. The central character is Jack Bauer, a former Delta Force operator who is the Director of the fictional Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) in Los Angeles. Bauer becomes professionally as well as personally involved when his wife Teri and daughter Kim are kidnapped by the people behind the assassination plot.

The season is essentially divided into two halves:

  • The first half revolves around a mercenary group's efforts to control Jack Bauer by kidnapping his wife and daughter and forcing him to kill Senator Palmer. This culminates in Jack's successful rescue of his family.
  • 12-hour clock

    The 12-hour clock is a time convention in which the 24 hours of the day are divided into two periods:a.m. (from the Latin ante meridiem, meaning "before midday") and p.m. (post meridiem, "after midday"). Each period consists of 12 hours numbered: 12 (acting as zero),1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. The 24 hour/day cycle starts at 12 midnight (often indicated as 12 a.m.), runs through 12 noon (often indicated as 12 p.m.), and continues to the midnight at the end of the day.

    The 12-hour clock was developed over time from the mid-second millennium BC to the 16th century AD.

    History and use

    The natural day/night division of a calendar day forms the fundamental basis as to why each day is split into two cycles. Originally these were one cycle which could be tracked by the position of the Sun (day) followed by one cycle which could be tracked by the Moon and stars (night). This would eventually evolve into the two 12-hour periods that started at midnight (a.m.) and noon (p.m.) which are used today. Noon itself is rarely abbreviated today, but if it is, it is denoted M.

    KHTB

    KHTB (101.9 FM) is a Salt Lake City, Utah-based radio station. The station's studios are located in South Salt Lake (behind the I-15/I-80 interchange) and its transmitter site is located southwest of the city on Farnsworth Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains.

    History of KKAT

    In 1995, KKAT licensed "Young Country" from Alliance Broadcasting. It was the first country station to intentionally go after young listeners. Also that year, Kid Cassidy (John Potter) of KWNR replaced Gary and Scotty in the mornings, with Insane Rick Shane remaining as producer. Other local hosts were T.J. Evans, "Gentleman Jim" Mickleson, Bob Wells and Tracy Chapman, while Blair Garner did the overnight shift. KKAT took over the number one position among five country stations from KSOP-FM, the only station in the group to lose listeners. Gary and Scotty had been hired to replace Ken Simmons after Simmons' arrest for lewd behavior, and the station and the morning hosts could not overcome the stigma of that incident. But hiring Cassidy and a strong promotional effort worked. KKAT would be replaced by KPQP, a Top 40 station, in 2004. KPQP would last until KENZ's move to the frequency in late 2005.

    The End...

    The End... is the fourth studio album by Nico. It was released in November 1974, through record label Island.

    Background

    The End... is her fifth collaboration with John Cale and second with him as producer. It carries the same harmonium-based sound heard on The Marble Index (1969) and Desertshore (1970), with the addition of Brian Eno's synthesizers and electronic instruments.

    The song "You Forget to Answer" tells of the misery felt by Nico when she failed to reach ex-lover Jim Morrison by phone only to find out later that he had died. All but two of the songs on the album were written by Nico: the cover of The Doors' "The End" and a version of the German national anthem "Das Lied der Deutschen". Brian Eno performs synthesizer on "It Has Not Taken Long", "You Forgot to Answer" and "Innocent and Vain".

    The front and back covers feature stills from the Philippe Garrel film Les hautes solitudes (1974) in which Nico appears.

    The End (UK band)

    The End was a British rock band formed in 1965 by Dave Brown (bass, vocals) and Colin Griffin (guitar, lead vocals) following the demise of The Innocents. Nick Graham (keyboards, vocals) and John Horton (saxophone) joined from Dickie Pride's backing group, The Original Topics, and Roger Groom (drums) of The Tuxedos completed the line-up. The band was produced by Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, who arranged for them to tour with his group. After the tour, Grooms quit and was replaced by Hugh Atwooll, an old friend of Graham. Horton would also quit, but continued to work with the band on their second single, "Shades of Orange". In 1969 the band released their only album, Introspection.

    They are not to be confused with the similarly named California band, who released two singles for Kabron Records in 1966/67.
