Lillian Diana Gish (October 14, 1893 – February 27, 1993) was an American actress of the screen and stage, as well as a director and writer whose film acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912 in silent film shorts to 1987. Gish was called the First Lady of American Cinema, and she is credited with pioneering fundamental film performing techniques.
Gish was a prominent film star of the 1910s and 1920s, particularly associated with the films of director D. W. Griffith, including her leading role in the highest-grossing film of the silent era, Griffith's seminal The Birth of a Nation (1915). At the dawn of the sound era, she returned to the stage and appeared in film infrequently, including well-known roles in the controversial western Duel in the Sun (1946) and the offbeat thriller The Night of the Hunter (1955). She also did considerable television work from the early 1950s into the 1980s and closed her career playing, for the first time, opposite Bette Davis in the 1987 film The Whales of August (which would prove to be one of Davis' last on-screen appearances). In her later years Gish became a dedicated advocate for the appreciation and preservation of silent film. Gish is widely considered to be the greatest actress of the silent era, and one of the greatest actresses in cinema history. Despite being better known for her film work, Gish was also an accomplished stage actress, and she was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1972.
The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize or Gish Prize is given annually to “a man or woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life.” It is among the most prestigious and one of the richest prizes in the American arts, for example the 2010 winner (Chinua Achebe) received $300,000. The founders Dorothy Gish (1898–1968) and Lillian Gish (1893–1993) were sisters, famous as actresses from the silent era of film and mid-century theatre. About the prize, established in Lillian Gish's will, she said: “It is my desire, by establishing this prize, to give recipients of the prize the recognition they deserve, to bring attention to their contributions to society and encourage others to follow in their path.” It was established in 1994 by the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize Trust and administered by JPMorgan Chase Bank.

My, my how things have changed since I have been away
It’s the first time but it’s different, I’m afraid
Where’s the boy so happy to be near it all?
He’s lost in the travels
A little part of me so small
Cry for me
Cry for him
Cry for the answer
Cry because it’s done
Cry for the feeling
Cry for the youth
All for the prize
Through different eyes
The promise that you have made forgets
See it as you may
Deny it while you can
Search for the reasons
As you beg to understand
Cry for me
Cry for him
Cry for the answer
Cry because it’s done
Cry for the feeling
Cry for the youth
All for the prize
Come and go
Don’t get pulled into the light
Come and go
Wouldn’t believe it if you tried
Come and go
It’s as useless as it was
You can go
The end we know
I wont tell you anything
So far away you are to me
Cry for me
Cry for him
Cry for the answer
Cry because it’s done
Cry for the feeling
Cry for the youth
All for the prize
My, my I swear it’s been a lifetime since i have been away
It’s the last time but somehow it’s all the same
