The Diplomat

The Diplomat is an online international news magazine covering politics, society, and culture in the Asia-Pacific region. It is based in Tokyo, Japan.

History

It was originally an Australian bi-monthly print magazine, founded by Minh Bui Jones, David Llewellyn-Smith and Sung Lee in 2001. The first edition was published in April 2002, with Bui Jones as the founding editor and Llewellyn-Smith the founding publisher.

In September 2004, the U.S. magazine Time forced the cancellation of advertisements by The Diplomat, which emphasised the magazine's Australian perspective by presenting the national flags of the United States, the UK, and Australia and logos of Time and The Economist below a headline "To which view do you subscribe?"

The magazine was acquired by James Pach through his company Trans-Asia Inc. in December 2007. Pach assumed the role of executive publisher and hired former Penthouse editor Ian Gerrard to update its presentation. Nonetheless, the print edition suffered continued losses, and The Diplomat eventually went completely online in August 2009. Its Sydney office was closed and its headquarters were moved to Tokyo; Jason Miks was appointed editor in September 2009 and Ulara Nakagawa was appointed associate editor. Miks was succeeded as editor by Harry Kazianis before publisher James Pach took over. Shannon Tiezzi currently serves as managing editor. Franz-Stefan Gady, Ankit Panda, Catherine Putz, and Prashanth Parameswaran are associate editors.

The Diplomat (novel)

The Diplomat is a 1949 novel by an Australian writer James Aldridge. The book tells the story of three British diplomats, while they set out for a journey, to get acquainted with the situation in Iranian Azerbaijan and Iranian Kurdistan at the brink of the Cold War.

The Diplomat (2015 film)

The Diplomat is a documentary film released in 2015 which features the late Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, "a young foreign service officer in Vietnam in the early 1960s", whose career continued for fifty years. His role within the Obama administration was as a "special representative" for Afghanistan and Pakistan. The documentary's perspective is from Holbrooke's son, David.

Release

The film had its U.S. premiere at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival on April 23rd. Following the premiere, Director David Holbrooke and Producer Stacey Reiss participated in a Q&A session hosted by Katie Couric and featuring Roger Cohen and Ronan Farrow. In addition to Tribeca, the film played at additional festivals and was screened for audiences across the United States and Europe. Some notable screenings included AFI Docs,San Francisco International Film Festival,Traverse City Film Festival,Sarajevo Film Festival,Jerusalem Film Festival, and Telluride Mountainfilm.

The documentary aired nationally on HBO on November 2nd, 2015 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Dayton Agreement which ended the Bosnian War.
