The Herald (Everett)

The Herald is a newspaper based in Everett, Washington. It used to be owned by The Washington Post Company. The paper serves as a major news source for residents of Snohomish County.

History

The Herald was first published on February 11, 1901. It was purchased by the Washington Post Company in 1978. It was previously owned by the Best family.The Herald's website, HeraldNet.com, was launched on January 5, 1997.

For years, The Herald was an afternoon paper. It is now a morning paper.

On February 6, 2013, the Washington Post Company announced it was selling the paper to the Sound Publishing division, based in Poulsbo, Washington, of Black Press, based in Victoria, British Columbia.

Notable court cases

In March 1983, The Herald lost an appellate court case in the State of Washington in which it sought to quash a subpoena allowing a judicial review of confidential material gathered for articles it had published in 1979 on the cult activities of Theodore Rinaldo, who had since been convicted on charges of rape, indecent liberties and assault.The New York Times reported that the court had ruled that "criminal defendants could force reporters to reveal confidential sources if the information was crucial to the case" and characterized the loss as "a major defeat for the news media".The Herald took the Appeals Court decision to the Washington Supreme Court in State v. Rinaldo 102 Wn.2d 749 (1984), which was heard en banc with the result that the subpoena itself was quashed on the basis that Rinaldo had not met the threshold requirements to compel such an inspection, while upholding the Court of Appeals ruling in general.

Daily Herald (Utah)

The Daily Herald is a daily newspaper that covers news and community events in Utah County, central Utah. Much of the coverage focuses on the Provo-Orem metropolitan area in Utah Valley.

The Daily Herald is owned by Lee Enterprises, a media company based in Davenport, Iowa. It was acquired along with 13 other newspapers, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, when Lee purchased Pulitzer, Inc. in 2005. The paper has a daily circulation of 32,000, with a Thursday circulation of 42,000 and a Sunday circulation of 36,000. It also owns nine community publications in Utah and Sanpete counties.

History

The earliest predecessor of the Daily Herald, the Provo Daily Times, was founded in 1873. It was the first newspaper to be published in Provo, when Utah was still a frontier territory. The paper eventually changed its name to the Enquirer, and then to the Provo Post. A competitor, the Utah County Democrat, was founded in 1898 and renamed the Provo Herald in 1909. In 1924 the Provo Post and the Provo Herald merged, forming a final foundation for the later Daily Herald. The company was purchased in 1926 by James G. Scripps, eldest son of newspaper magnate E. W. Scripps. Scripps League Newspapers held the newspaper until 1996, when it was sold to Pulitzer, which held it for almost a decade. In 2005 Pulitzer was sold to Lee Enterprises.

Daily Herald (UK newspaper)

The Daily Herald was a British daily newspaper, published in London from 1912 to 1964 (although it was weekly during the First World War). It underwent several changes of management before ceasing publication in 1964, when it was relaunched as The Sun, in its pre-Murdoch form.

Origins

In December 1910 the printers' union, the London Society of Compositors (LSC), became engaged in an industrial struggle to establish a 48-hour week and started a daily strike bulletin called The World. Will Dyson, an Australian artist in London, contributed a cartoon. From 25 January 1911 it was renamed the Daily Herald and was published until the end of the strike in April 1911. At its peak it had daily sales of 25,000.

Ben Tillett, the dockers' leader, and other radical trade unionists were inspired to raise funds for a permanent labour movement daily, to compete with the newspapers that championed the two main political parties, the Liberals and Conservatives, but independent of the official Labour Party and the Trades Union Congress, which were planning a daily of their own (launched as the Daily Citizen in October 1912).

Daily Herald (Columbia, Tennessee)

The Daily Herald is a daily newspaper in Columbia, Tennessee. The newspaper is published six days a week Sunday through Friday; the paper does not publish on Saturday. Although it is primarily distributed to Maury County, Tennessee its Newspaper Designated Market (N.D.M.) stretches into five counties in Southern Middle Tennessee. The five county distribution area of The Daily Herald includes: Maury County, Tennessee; Marshall County, Tennessee; Lewis County, Tennessee; and the northern halves of both Giles County, Tennessee and Lawrence County, Tennessee.

History

The Daily Herald was founded as a weekly newspaper in 1848, when Columbia's population was only 1,700 people. In 1899, the newspaper converted from weekly to daily delivery. The city now has a population 34,811 in 2010 with a county population exceeding 81,956. Weekday circulation (Monday-Friday) is 11,500 and Sunday circulation is 13,500, according to audited figures.

Ownership

In 1916 the newspaper was purchased by Walter D. Hastings and James I. Finney. Beginning in 1965 the newspaper was purchased by local businessman and politician Sam Delk Kennedy who also served as publisher. Kennedy served as either Editor or Publisher or both from 1965 to 1983. It was acquired by the Donrey Media Group (founder Donald W. Reynolds) in 1983. Reynolds died in 1993. The company was then sold to the Stephens family of Arkansas, best known for their investment banking business Stephens Inc. in Little Rock, Arkansas. After Stephens acquired the group, some of Donrey's properties were sold off, and the company moved its headquarters to Las Vegas, home of its largest newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The company was renamed Stephens Media Group in 2002. Most of Stephens newspapers operated in small to medium-sized towns and cities, but the company also owns the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a 186,000 circulation newspaper.

Daily Herald (Adelaide)

The Daily Herald was a daily newspaper published in Adelaide, South Australia from 7 March 1910 to 16 June 1924 by the Cooperative Printing and Publishing Company of S.A. Limited, with offices at 117 Grenfell Street for the Labor Party.

History

The paper had its origin in the Herald, an Adelaide weekly which was founded in 1899, and whose editor was Geoff Burgoyne, later leader writer for Sir Winthrop Hackett's West Australian. The earlier Weekly Herald was published between 1894 and 1898.

The first editor was William Wedd (9 January 1845 – 10 February 1922), with Geoffrey Burgoyne as associate editor. The first few weeks' issues were printed by The Register, as its own presses had teething problems. Wedd was forced by ill-health to retire after a year or two, but continued to contribute, as "Epsilon" and "Remus", to the Herald and other newspapers. Burgoyne, a son of T. Burgoyne M.P., was later with The West Australian, then in 1924 the founding editor of the Hobart News, daughter publication of the Adelaide News. In 1940 he was managing editor of the Perth News.
