The Crisis

The Crisis begun as, and has always been, the official magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and was founded in 1910 by W. E. B. Du Bois (editor), Oswald Garrison Villard, J. Max Barber, Charles Edward Russell, Kelly Miller, W. S. Braithwaite, and M. D. Maclean.^[2]The Crisis has been an influential magazine of record for African American readers since 1910, and is still in print today.

History

The Crisis has been, at various times during its 100+ year run, a periodical record of current events, a sounding-board for the opinions of African American social and political leaders, and a site of literature development and showcasing.

Beginnings and the DuBois era

The original title of the magazine was The Crisis: A Record of The Darker Races. From 1997 to 2003, it appeared as The New Crisis: The Magazine of Opportunities and Ideas, but the title has since reverted to The Crisis. The magazine’s name was supposedly inspired by James Russell Lowell’s 1844 poem, “The Present Crisis;” the suggestion to name the magazine after the poem supposedly came from noted white abolitionist Mary White Ovington, one of the NAACP co-founders.

The Crisis (1916 film)

The Crisis is a 1916 American silent historical drama film produced by William N. Selig and directed by Colin Campbell. The film is based on the American Civil War novel The Crisis by American novelist Winston Churchill. The novel was produced adapted into a play and produced on Broadway in 1902.

A copy of this film is preserved at the Library of Congress.

Reception

The Crisis sought to mine the success of 1915's The Birth of a Nation. It was popular in theatres, but the United States' entry into World War I in April 1917 effectively ended interest in another Civil War film in light of the new war.

The Crisis is an American television series that aired live on NBC from October 5, 1949, to December 28, 1949.

Synopsis

The series featured a guest describing events leading up to a critical moment in their life. At the major turning point in the story, the guest's story was stopped, and professional actors who did not know the outcome of the event, would act out the rest of the guest's story as they imagined it might have been resolved. The actors worked unrehearsed and without scripts. After the scene was acted out, the guest would return to explain what actually happened.

The Crisis (novel)

The Crisis is an historical novel published in 1901 by the American novelist Winston Churchill. It was the best-selling book in the United States in 1901. The novel is set in the years leading up to the first battles of the U.S. Civil War, mostly in the divided state of Missouri. It follows the fortunes of young Stephen Brice, a man with Union and abolitionist sympathies, and his involvement with a Southern family.

Story

Set in the author's home town of St. Louis, Missouri, the site of pivotal events in the western theater of the Civil War, with historically prominent citizens having both Northern and Southern sympathies. St. Louis was also the pre-war home of both Ulysses Grant and William T. Sherman, each of whom is depicted in the book.

Romantic tension develops between the four main characters: one, Virginia Carvel, the fashionable daughter of Comyn Carvel, a southern gentleman of the old school; another, Clarence Maxwell Colfax, her n'er-do-well cousin who becomes a stalwart cavalier in the Southern cause in an effort to win Ginny's approval; the third, Stephen A. Brice, an earnest young lawyer from Boston who antagonizes Virginia by his zeal for Abraham Lincoln's cause; and the fourth, Eliphalet Hopper, a hard-working clerk with ambitions to advance himself both financially and socially.

The Crisis (newspaper)

The Crisis was a newspaper published during the first half of the American Civil War by Samuel Medary that was critical of the American government's decision to limit slavery, and following the beginning of the war against the Confederate States of America, to wage war against the South. It was presented as the newspaper for favor with "Peace Democrats" (often referred to as Copperheads) - those northerners who sided with the Confederate cause during the war.

Background

Medary began publishing The Crisis in Columbus, Ohio, in 1860. The name alluded to previous newspapers and broadsides during the American Revolutionary War that spoke out against British rule over the colonies. Medary's use of the name for his paper was an attempt to tie the States Rights movement to those who fought for American independence. For Copperheads, Abraham Lincoln was every bit the evil that was King George III.

During the 1863 Ohio Gubernatorial race, the newspaper endorsed Clement Vallandigham, the exiled leader of the Ohio Copperhead movement. While Vallandigham won the Democratic nomination, he lost the race to War Democrat candidate John Brough.
