Colosseum

The Colosseum or Coliseum (/kɒləˈsiːəm/ kol-ə-SEE-əm), also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium; Italian: Anfiteatro Flavio [amfiteˈaːtro ˈflaːvjo] or Colosseo [kolosˈsɛːo]), is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in 72 AD, and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heir Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin for its association with their family name (Flavius).

The Colosseum could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, having an average audience of some 65,000; it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

The Colosseum (shopping mall)

The Colosseum will be a shopping mall in Bucharest, Romania, located in the North-Western part of the city, near Chitila. After completion, it will be the biggest mall in Romania and one of the biggest shopping malls in Europe. The construction is planned to start towards the autumn of 2012 and will take four years.

The Colosseum (Manhattan)

The Colosseum is an apartment building located at 116th Street and Riverside Drive in Morningside Heights, Manhattan, New York City.

The building is noted for its curved façade (which isn't a style specific to New York buildings) and impressive marble lobby. Across 116th Street, The Colosseum faces The Paterno, another building with a similar curved facade. The New York Times has said that the "opposing curves, (form) a gateway as impressive as any publicly built arch or plaza in New York." The unusual curved facades are the result of an 1897 plan to make the land between Claremont Avenue and Riverside Drive into a public park in order to give veterans' parades a large park adjacent to Grant's Tomb as a terminus. The street was redesigned to enter the proposed park in a gracious curve, but the city never appropriated funds to buy the land.

The Colosseum was designed by Schwartz & Gross and built by the Paterno Brothers, Charles and Joseph, in 1910. The luxury four-bedroom apartments with sweeping views of the Hudson River rented for $150 to $175 a month.

Colosseum is the second studio album by Shockabilly, released in 1984 by Rough Trade Records. It released on CD as The Ghost of Shockabilly in 1989.

Colosseum (band)

Colosseum were a pioneering English progressive jazz-rock band, mixing progressive rock and jazz-based improvisation.

History 1968–1971

The band was formed in September 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman, tenor sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith and bass player Tony Reeves, who had previously worked together in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers on the Bare Wires album. Dave Greenslade, on organ, was immediately recruited, and the line-up was completed by Jim Roche on guitar, although Roche only recorded one track before being replaced by James Litherland, (guitar and vocals). Hiseman and Heckstall-Smith had also previously played in Graham Bond's band, and Colosseum utilised several of the songs from that period.

The band made their live debut in Newcastle and were promptly recorded by influential BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel for his Top Gear Radio program. This appearance gained them valuable exposure and critical acclaim.

Their first album, Those Who Are About to Die Salute You, which opened with the Bond composition "Walkin' in the Park", was released by the Fontana label in 1969, and in March the same year they played at the Supershow, a recorded two-day jam session, along with Modern Jazz Quartet, Led Zeppelin, Jack Bruce, Roland Kirk Quartet, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, and Juicy Lucy. Colosseum's second album, also in 1969, was Valentyne Suite, notable as the first release from Vertigo Records, a branch of Philips Records established to sign and develop artists that did not fit the main Philips brand, and the first label to sign heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath.

Colosseum (train)

The Colosseum was an express train initially linking Rome and Milan later Frankfurt am Main. The train was named after the Amphitheatrum Flavium, renowned as Colosseum.

Trans Europ Express

The Colosseum was the successor of the TEE Settebello on the same route and schedule. The ETR 300 rolling stock was replaced by locomotive hauled coaches of the Gran Conforto Class. Because the name Settebello was widely associated with the ETR 300 the name of the Milan - Rome service changed as well. On 3 June 1984 the service continued as TEE Colosseum or Colosseo in Italian. The train was hauled by FS Class E.444 locomotives and used the Gran Conforto coaches used in the TEE Adriatico until 2 June 1984. After three years of service the Colosseum was converted to a two-class InterCity.

EuroCity

On 28 May 1989 the route was extended farther north to Frankfurt am Main, being international the train qualified as EuroCity. The coaches for the EuroCity were provided by Deutsche Bundesbahn. In 1991 the German InterCityExpress (ICE) started with the opening of the Hanover - Würzburg highspeed railway. This meant a reorganisation of the long distance trainservices that effected the EuroCitys as well. Travellers to Frankfurt could use the ICE north of Basle but the Rhine valley farther north did not have a highspeed service yet and the number of EuroCitys there was increased. Travellers from Milan to Germany could use the EC Verdi but this train did not ride south of Milan. The Colosseum was shortened to the Rome - Basel portion and was continued until 31 May 1997. On 1 June 1997 Cisalpino introduced ETR 470 tilting trains between Milan and Basle that replaced the EC Colosseum.
