An alliance is a relationship among people, groups, or states that have joined together for mutual benefit or to achieve some common purpose, whether or not explicit agreement has been worked out among them. Members of an alliance are called allies. Alliances form in many settings, including political alliances, military alliances, and business alliances. When the term is used in the context of war or armed struggle, such associations may also be called allied powers, especially when discussing World War I or World War II.
A formal military alliance is not required for being perceived as an ally—co-belligerence, fighting alongside someone, is enough. According to this usage, allies become so not when concluding an alliance treaty but when struck by war.
When spelled with a capital "A", the word "Allies" usually denotes the countries who fought together against the Central Powers in World War I (the Allies of World War I), or those who fought against the Axis Powers in World War II (the Allies of World War II). The term has also been used by the United States Army to describe the countries that gave assistance to the South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
The Young Allies are a team of DC Comics superheroes who operated during World War II, created by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas and Michael Bair. The team and most of its members debuted in Young All-Stars #22 (January 1989).
This band of young heroes first appeared on a morale-boosting mission to the United States in a story set in 1942. They were inadvertently involved in one of the All-Stars' cases when Axis Amerika attempted to steal plutonium from Albert Einstein and his colleagues in St. Louis (Young All-Stars #22-26). After this case, these heroes returned to their homelands and have not made any appearances in modern times.
Each member hailed from a country allied with the U.S. during World War II. Of the team's members, only the Squire originally appeared during the 1940s (Batman #62), the others having been retconned (retroactively inserted into continuity).
The Allies were a representative Australian rules football team made up of players who played their junior football in the ACT, New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania, formed to participate against other states in state of origin football matches.
The team was first proposed as part of the AFL Commission's five-year plan released in August 1994. The team was intended to renew the public's waning interest in the state of origin series by creating a composite team of the sport's minor states which would be more competitive against the main states (Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia) than any individual minor state team. The team was launched in March 1995, known in full as the Australian Football Alliance, or for short as the Allies; the name was intentionally selected to honour World War II's Allies, which were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the war victory that year.
The Allies first played in 1995, against Western Australia, winning 13.14 (92) to 8.13 (61). In total, the team played four matches; two against Western Australia, winning both, and two against Victoria, losing both. The Allies played their last game in 1998.
