USS Maine (ACR-1)

USS Maine (ACR-1), commissioned in 1895, was the first United States Navy ship to be named after the state of Maine. Originally classified as an armored cruiser, she was built in response to the Brazilian battleship Riachuelo and the increase of naval forces in Latin America. Maine and her near-sister ship Texas reflected the latest European naval developments, with the layout of her main armament resembling that of the British ironclad Inflexible and comparable Italian ships. Her two gun turrets were staggered en échelon, rather than on the centerline, with the fore gun sponsoned out on the starboard side of the ship and the aft gun on the port side, with cutaways in the superstructure to allow both to fire ahead, astern or across her deck. She dispensed with full masts thanks to the increased reliability of steam engines by the time of her construction.

Despite these advances, Maine was out of date by the time she entered service, due to her protracted construction period and changes in the role of ships of her type, naval tactics and technology. The general use of steel in warship construction precluded the use of ramming without danger to the attacking vessel. The potential for blast damage from firing end on or cross-deck discouraged en échelon gun placement. The changing role of the armored cruiser from a small, heavily armored substitute for the battleship to a fast, lightly armored commerce raider also hastened her obsolescence. Despite these disadvantages, Maine was seen as an advance in American warship design.

The Maine is an emo group from Tempe, Arizona whom formed in 2007. Their first release, the EP Stay Up, Get Down was released in late 2007, followed by a five song EP titled The Way We Talk released on December 11, 2007. The band's first full-length album, Can't Stop, Won't Stop was released July 8, 2008. Their holiday release ...And a Happy New Year was released in December 2008. The Maine released their second full-length album, Black & White, on July 13, 2010, selling 22,634 copies in its first week. On December 6, 2011, the group's third album, Pioneer, was released and it peaked at No. 90 on the Billboard 200. Their fourth full-length record Forever Halloween was released on June 4, 2013 reaching No. 39 on the Billboard 200 by selling over 10,000 copies in its first week. The Maine later released a deluxe edition of Forever Halloween on June 17, 2014. The fifth studio album, "American Candy", was released on March 31, 2015.

SS Maine

SS Maine was a British steamship launched in 1905 as a 3600 ton cargo steamer with a triple expansion engine. She was torpedoed and sunk on 21 November 1917 by UC-17, about 10 miles (16 km) off Dartmouth. She sank "gracefully, upright and on an even keel" and sits on shingle 36 metres (118 ft) at 50°12.750′N 3°50.955′W / 50.212500°N 3.849250°W / 50.212500; -3.849250Coordinates: 50°12.750′N 3°50.955′W / 50.212500°N 3.849250°W / 50.212500; -3.849250.

The Torbay British Sub-Aqua Club bought the wreck for £100 in 1962 and salvaged the bronze propeller, selling it for £800.

Maine (ⁱ/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in New England, in the United States. Maine is the 39th most extensive and the 42nd most populous of the 50 U.S. states. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.
