Tetris

Tetris (Russian: Те́трис, pronounced [ˈtɛtrʲɪs]) is a Russian tile-matching puzzle video game, originally designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov. It was released on June 6, 1984, while he was working for the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the USSR in Moscow. He derived its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all of the game's pieces contain four segments) and tennis, Pajitnov's favorite sport.

Tetris was the first entertainment software to be exported from the USSR to the US, where it was published by Spectrum HoloByte for Commodore 64 and IBM PC. The Tetris game is a popular use of tetrominoes, the four-element special case of polyominoes. Polyominoes have been used in popular puzzles since at least 1907, and the name was given by the mathematician Solomon W. Golomb in 1953. However, even the enumeration of pentominoes is dated to antiquity.

The game (or one of its many variants) is available for nearly every video game console and computer operating system, as well as on devices such as graphing calculators, mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs, Network music players and even as an Easter egg on non-media products like oscilloscopes. It has even inspired Tetris serving dishes and been played on the sides of various buildings.

Tetris: Axis

Tetris: Axis, released as simply Tetris in some regions, is a puzzle video game for the Nintendo 3DS developed by Hudson Soft and Bandai and was published by Nintendo. The game was released in all regions in October 2011 and was published by Namco Bandai Games and Tetris Online, Inc. in Japan and PAL regions respectively.

Game modes

Tetris: Axis features over 20 game modes, which are divided up into three modes, Feature modes, Party modes, and AR modes.

Featured modes

  • Fever: The player must get as many points as possible in only a minute of time. Racking up a certain number of points as quickly as possible earns the player color bonuses which when used, alter the gameplay and rack up extra points.
  • Computer Battle: The player competes against computer players where clearing lines floods the opponent's area with garbage blocks that can only be eliminated by clearing them.
  • Marathon: The standard mode of gameplay.
  • Survival: The player plays in an extra-narrow area while blocks are constantly rising up from the bottom. The game ends if the stack of blocks rises to the top.
  • Tetris (Electronic Arts)

Tetris is a puzzle video game developed by EA Mobile and published by Electronic Arts for the iOS, Android, BlackBerry OS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and Windows Phone. It was first released on September 12, 2006. The game featured gameplay like other Tetris titles, but with a new soundtrack.

The game had reached 100 million paid downloads by 2010, at a price of $0.99 per download. As of 2014, it reached 425 million paid downloads, making it the best-selling paid mobile game of all time.

    Gameplay

Gameplay was nearly identical in gameplay to other Tetris titles, but with a new soundtrack. Players also had the ability to create their own soundtrack for the game using the music library of the iPhone or iPod Touch device in which the game is being played on. The game offered two modes of play dubbed "Marathon" mode and "Magic" mode.

    Marathon

Marathon mode played as a more classic version of Tetris, where a point system along with amount of lines cleared were kept as indicators of progress. The level of speed was chosen prior to starting the mode of gameplay. There were 15 levels total, and like Magic mode, this mode ends after all 15 levels have been completed. Unlike the original version of Tetris, Marathon mode ends after clearing 150 lines. Once Marathon mode ends, the Endless feature becomes unlocked.
