Terry Fox

Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox CC OD (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Although the spread of his cancer eventually forced him to end his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 mi), and ultimately cost him his life, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$650 million has been raised in his name.

Fox was a distance runner and basketball player for his Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, high school and Simon Fraser University. His right leg was amputated in 1977 after he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, though he continued to run using an artificial leg. He also played wheelchair basketball in Vancouver, winning three national championships.

Terry Fox (artist)

Terry Fox (1943 – October 14, 2008) was an American video, conceptual, sound, and performance artist.

Biography

Fox was born in Seattle, Washington. At the age of seventeen, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, later referencing the cycles of illness and wellness in several artworks. Fox was an important figure in post-minimal sculpture, conceptual art, performance, and video art on the West Coast. Before permanently moving to Europe, he was based in San Francisco in the late 1960s and 1970s. Fox later moved to Liege, Belgium. His seminal series of works (environments, performances, sculptures, drawings) produced over an eight-year period was based on the theme of the configuration of the Chartres Labyrinth. He died in Cologne, Germany in 2008.

Fox has been included in numerous international solo and group exhibitions including the documenta 5, Kassel, 1975 Whitney Biennial and 1984 Venice Biennale. He had two major exhibitions in Berkeley, his first solo museum show curated by Brenda Richardson in 1973, and one in 1985 organized around the body of works owned by the Berkeley Art Museum organized by Constance Lewallen. His retrospective solo exhibition was organized by the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel in 2003.

Terry Fox (baseball)

Terrence Edward Fox (born July 31, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois) is a retired American right-handed Major League Baseball relief pitcher/closer who played seven seasons from 1960 to 1966. He played for the Milwaukee Braves, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies.

Fox played at Thornton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois, graduating in 1953. Standing at 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) and weighing 175 pounds, Fox found his way into the Braves organization before the 1956 season. The New Iberia Pelicans (or Indians) of the Evangeline League sent Fox to the Braves in an unknown transaction. He made his big league debut for the Braves on September 4, 1960 at the age of 25 and wearing the number 36, pitching two-thirds of an inning against the Cincinnati Reds. He gave up one hit and walked a batter, but came away otherwise unscathed. He ended up pitching in a total of 5 games for the Braves in his rookie season, posting a 4.32 ERA.

He was traded along with Dick Brown, Bill Bruton and Chuck Cottier from the Braves to the Tigers for Frank Bolling and Neil Chrisley. The Tigers would end up getting the better of the deal—although Cottier didn't amount to much with the Braves, Brown and Bruton both had the best seasons of their careers when it came to home run output, but the real gem of the trade was Fox himself.
