COM file

A COM file is a type of simple executable file. On the Digital Equipment operating systems of the 1970s, .COM was used as a filename extension for text files containing commands to be issued to the operating system (similar to a batch file). With the introduction of CP/M (a microcomputer operating system), the type of files commonly associated with COM extension changed to that of executable files. This convention was later carried over to MS-DOS. Even when complemented by the more general .exe file format for executables, the compact COM files remain viable and frequently used in MS-DOS.

The .COM file name extension has no relation to the .com (for "commercial") top-level Internet domain name. However, this similarity in name has been exploited by malicious computer virus writers.

MS-DOS binary format

The COM format is the original binary executable format used in CP/M and MS-DOS. It is very simple; it has no header (with the exception of CP/M 3 files), and contains no standard metadata, only code and data. This simplicity exacts a price: the binary has a maximum size of 65,280 (FF00h) bytes (256 bytes short of 64 KB) and stores all its code and data in one segment.

56.com is one of the largest video sharing websites in China, where users can upload, view and share video clips.

A fully owned subsidiary of Sohu, the company is headquartered in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, Guangdong.

The domain 56.com attracted at least 3.2 million visitors annually by 2008 according to a Compete.com survey.

Access to the Chinese online video provider 56.com was suspended since 18:00 on June 3, 2008. 56.com made an explanation at 10:00 on June 4, 16 hours after the website's access was stopped, and said that the website had experienced a server failure and was being repaired, but it did not give a clear time for when the site's services would be fully resumed. Some media, such as Hexun.com and Sina.com, reported that as 56.com had frequently violated relevant government rules with its video content, it had therefore been issued a warning by the government and might be closed for a few days. However, this was denied by 56.com. By July 11, 2008, 56.com was back and operational.

Terra (satellite)

Terra (EOS AM-1) is a multi-national NASA scientific research satellite in a Sun-synchronous orbit around the Earth. It is the flagship of the Earth Observing System (EOS). The name "Terra" comes from the Latin word for Earth.

Launch

The satellite was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base on December 18, 1999, aboard an Atlas IIAS vehicle and began collecting data on February 24, 2000. It was placed into a near-polar, sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 705km, with a 10:30am descending node.

Mission

Terra carries a payload of five remote sensors designed to monitor the state of Earth's environment and ongoing changes in its climate system:

Data from the satellite helps scientists better understand the spread of pollution around the globe. Studies have used instruments on Terra to examine trends in global carbon monoxide and aerosol pollution. The data collected by Terra will ultimately become a new, 15-year global data set.

Terra (currency)

Terra (The Trade Reference Currency, TRC) is the name of a possible "world currency". The concept was proposed by Belgian economist and expert on monetary systems Bernard A. Lietaer in 2001, based on a similar proposal from the 1930s.

The currency is meant to be based on a basket of the 9-12 most important commodities (according to their importance in worldwide trade). Lietaer opines this would provide a currency that wouldn't suffer from inflation:

Terra = reference unit defined as standardized basket of key internationally traded commodities & services.

Example: 100 Terra =
                                         1 barrel of oil
                                      + 10 bushels of wheat
                                      + 20 kg of copper
                                        ...
                                      + 1/10 of ounce of gold

NB: any standardizable good or service can be included.
Similar stability to gold standard, but with basket instead of single commodity (more stable than any one component)...

Terra is Inflation-resistant by definition.

Terra Networks

Terra Networks, S.A. is a Spanish Internet multinational company with headquarter in Spain and offices in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, USA and Peru. Part of Telefónica Group (the former Spanish public telephone monopoly), Terra operates as a web portal and/or an internet access provider in the U.S., Spain, and 16 Latin American countries. History

Terra was founded in 1999 by Juan Villalonga, Telefónica's president between 1996 and 2000, and quickly turned into a major internet player through the aggressive acquisition of several local startups in Spain and the main Latin American markets: Olé (website) (Spain), Brazil, Mexico, Gauchonet, Donde (Argentina) and Chevere (Venezuela).

Terra has also created several vertical portals, like Invertia, a successful finance portal, and Educaterra (e-learning). It also has had or has stakes in other internet ventures: Uno-e (online banking), Rumbo (travel, in partnership with Amadeus), Atrea (real estate, in partnership with Spanish bank BBVA), Azeler (car selling, also with BBVA), and Maptel (online maps).
