Terence Crawford

Terence Crawford (born September 28, 1987) is an American professional boxer. He is the current WBO junior welterweight champion, as well as a former WBO and The Ring lightweight champion. As of October 2015, Crawford is ranked by The Ring magazine as the #7 pound for pound fighter in the world. Nicknamed "Bud", Crawford is known as a fast, hard-hitting and highly technical fighter, and is recognized for his unique ability to comfortably switch-hit from orthodox to southpaw.

Professional boxing career

Professional Debut and Development

Crawford made his professional debut on March 14, 2008, knocking out Brian Cummings in Round 1. Compiling an early career record of 19-0 against largely unheralded opposition, Crawford had his first notable bout on the undercard of the second fight between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado, against former WBO lightweight champion Breidis Prescott. Filling in for an injured fighter and accepting the bout on less than a month's notice, Crawford nevertheless outboxed the hard hitting Colombian and secured a unanimous decision victory.

Terence Crawford is an actor, acting teacher, author and playwright. He is currently Head of Acting at Adelaide College of the Arts.

Career

Terence Crawford graduated NIDA as an actor in 1984. Since then he has acted with many of Australia’s major theatre companies. He has held Head of Acting positions at the following institutions: Theatre Nepean (NSW), TTRP (Singapore) (now ITI), LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore), and ACArts (SA). He has also been a director at WAAPA and a guest at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq (Paris).

Crawford has two books published with Australia’s leading publishers of theatrical material, Currency Press: Dimensions of acting: An Australian approach, (2011) and Trade Secrets: Australian actors and their craft (2005).

As a playwright, Crawford's work has been produced by many theatre companies including Griffin Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company as well as for radio and television.

In addition to teaching acting Terence has taught play-writing, dramaturgy, and directing at under-graduate and post-graduate levels.

Terence

Publius Terentius Afer (/təˈrɛnʃiəs, -ʃəs/; c. 195/185 – c. 159? BC), better known in English as Terence (/ˈtɛrəns/), was a playwright of the Roman Republic, of North African descent. His comedies were performed for the first time around 170–160 BC. Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator, brought Terence to Rome as a slave, educated him and later on, impressed by his abilities, freed him. Terence apparently died young, probably in Greece or on his way back to Rome. All of the six plays Terence wrote have survived.

One famous quotation by Terence reads: "Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto", or "I am human, and nothing of that which is human is alien to me." This appeared in his play Heauton Timorumenos.

Biography

Terence's date of birth is disputed; Aelius Donatus, in his incomplete Commentum Terenti, considers the year 185 BC to be the year Terentius was born;Fenestella, on the other hand, states that he was born ten years earlier, in 195 BC.

He may have been born in or near Carthage or in Greek Italy to a woman taken to Carthage as a slave. Terence's cognomen Afer suggests he lived in the territory of the Libyan tribe called by the Romans Afri near Carthage prior to being brought to Rome as a slave. This inference is based on the fact that the term was used in two different ways during the republican era: during Terence's lifetime, it was used to refer to non-Carthaginian Libyco-Berbers, with the term Punicus reserved for the Carthaginians. Later, after the destruction of Carthage in 146 BC, it was used to refer to anyone from the land of the Afri (Tunisia and its surroundings). It is therefore most likely that Terence was of Libyan descent, considered ancestors to the modern-day Berber peoples.
