Ulmus parvifolia 'Dynasty'

The Chinese Elm cultivar Ulmus parvifolia 'Dynasty' is a United States National Arboretum introduction reputed to be very fast-growing.

Description

A medium tree rarely exceeding 13 m in height, with a spread of similar dimension producing a very rounded shape. Opinions of the tree's aesthetic merit vary; Dirr considered that the tree "borders on a boondoggle" whereas Warren and Jacobson thought the shape 'good', and the foliage a decent autumn colour (the leaves turn orange-yellow).

Pests and diseases

The species and its cultivars are highly resistant, but not immune, to Dutch elm disease, and unaffected by the Elm Leaf Beetle Xanthogaleruca luteola . Moreover, the tree's foliage was adjudged "resistant" to Black Spot by the Plant Diagnostic Clinic of the University of Missouri .

The tree is largely limited to North America, although it has been introduced to Italy.

Dynasty (Kaskade album)

Dynasty is the sixth solo album by house DJ Kaskade. It was released on iTunes on April 27, 2010, and physically on May 11, 2010. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, number 4 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart, and number 104 on the Billboard 200. The songs "Dynasty," "Fire in Your New Shoes" and "Call Out" were released as promo singles on iTunes in April, 2010, preceding the album's release.

Dynasty (Kiss album)

Dynasty is the seventh studio album by American rock band Kiss, produced by Vini Poncia and released on Casablanca Records on May 23, 1979. It marked the first time that the original four members of Kiss did not all appear together for the entire album. In later interviews, the band admitted that they started to listen to outsiders about what direction the music should go around the time of Dynasty.

Album information

The album and the following tour were billed as the "Return of Kiss". Kiss had not released a studio album since 1977's Love Gun. Instead, the band released their second live album and each member had recorded eponymous solo albums, which were simultaneously released on September 18, 1978.

After pre-production and rehearsals were completed, Vini Poncia (who had produced Peter Criss), decided that Criss' drumming was substandard, an opinion shared by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. Criss by this time was hindered by injuries suffered to his hands in a 1978 car accident. Kiss hired South African-born studio drummer Anton Fig, who played on Ace Frehley, to play on the Dynasty sessions. "On Dynasty, Peter was pretty much out of commission," reflected Stanley, "so I wouldn't point to it as a classic Kiss album." With the exception of his song, "Dirty Livin'", Criss does not appear on the album, and he would not perform on another Kiss album until 1998's Psycho Circus, on which he would again only play on one song. Fig was again hired to replace Criss during recording sessions for the following album Unmasked. Eric Carr was hired as Criss' permanent replacement before the tour for the album began.

Temptation

Temptation is a fundamental desire to engage in short-term urges for enjoyment, that threatens long-term goals. In the context of some religions, temptation is the inclination to sin. Temptation also describes the coaxing or inducing a person into committing such an act, by manipulation or otherwise of curiosity, desire or fear of loss.

In the context of self-control and ego depletion, temptation is described as an immediate, pleasurable urge and/or impulse that disrupts an individuals ability to wait for the long-term goals, in which that individual hopes to attain.

More informally, temptation may be used to mean "the state of being attracted and enticed" without anything to do with moral, ethical, or ideological valuation; for example, one may say that a piece of food looks "tempting" even though eating it would result in no negative consequences.

Research suggests that there are paradoxical effects associated with temptation. Including all the forms temptations can present themselves there is a set of options that may facilitate high moral standards in decision making.

Temptation (Shelby Lynne album)

Temptation is the fourth studio album by American country singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne, released July 6, 1993. Two songs, "Tell Me I'm Crazy"and "I Need a Heart to Come Home To", were released as singles and one of the tracks, "I Need a Heart to Come Home To", featured on the soundtrack to Tony Scott's 1993 film True Romance.

Background and release

Following her first three albums, Lynne left her record label Epic and began working with Brent Maher. In a 2009 interview, she said of the move, "After Soft Talk, I knew I had to take control. Hell, if I wasn’t going to be embraced by country radio, I might as well make critically acclaimed albums! I wanted to cross genres and not make that silly-ass country pop." She went on to say, "I consider Temptation the real beginning of my career." Lynne co-wrote two songs on the album, the title track and "Some of That True Love".

Temptation was released on July 6, 1993 on Mercury Records and Morgan Creek. The album reached No. 55 on the US Billboard Country Albums chart and No. 21 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. Two songs from the album were released as singles: "Feelin' Kind of Lonely Tonight", which reached No. 69 on the US Hot Country Songs chart, and "Tell Me I'm Crazy", which failed to chart. "I Need a Heart to Come Home To" was included on the soundtrack of Tony Scott's 1993 film True Romance.

Temptation (novella)

Temptation is a novella by David Brin which was published in 1999 in the anthology Far Horizons: All New Tales from the Greatest Worlds of Science Fiction, ed. by Robert Silverberg

Plot

On the planet of Jijo, a small colony has been set up to house a group of uplifted dolphins from the starship Streaker who suffer from a disorder known as stress-atavism. Stress atavism is a condition in which the primal traits and instincts of recently uplifted beings begin to reemerge due to stress, and in this case the pressures of space travel and war. Among the dolphins in the colony, there are those reverting into their primal state, and those left to monitor and care for the former. Since they have been abandoned on Jijo however, it is speculated that within a few generations, all of the uplifted traits will have been lost, leaving nothing but the primal nature dolphins had before being uplifted.

The story follows two main branches of events, both of which stem from the original colony overseen by a dolphin named Makanee. The first branch is the story of Peepoe; a young nurse who has been kidnapped by two of her male, former crew mates. The second is the story of Tkett; an eager archaeologist who is following the signs of what he hopes to be a space ship for several different reasons. Peepoe's story begins with her daring escape from her captors, whereas Tkett's story begins with his obsession for finding and studying the ancient and far advanced technology of “the Buyur,” a mysterious and elder alien race who had colonized, and abandoned Jijo prior to Streaker's arrival.
