Tempo (Serbian magazine)

Tempo (Serbian Cyrillic: Teмпo) was a Serbia-based magazine devoted to sports, published weekly.

Beginnings

Tempo was founded in Belgrade in 1966, as a weekly sports magazine under Politika's umbrella. Most of its coverage centered around football, with basketball, handball, volleyball, and water polo also featuring prominently. For decades, Tempo was famous among the youth of SFR Yugoslavia for publishing glossy color posters of their favourite domestic and foreign sporting heroes.

With internet sporting sites and specialty TV sports channels gradually eating into its readership since the early 2000s, Tempo eventually folded on July 7, 2004. It was the magazine's 1879th issue and its cover featured the Greek national football team that just won EURO 2004.

Brief rebirth (2007-2009)

In 2007, Tempo 21 launched. One of the main theories as to why the 21 was added to their name was that it was meant to symbolize the magazine's rebirth in the 21st century. A new issue was released every other Wednesday, and was sold not only in Serbia, but throughout the worldwide Serbian diaspora. In early 2009 however the magazine reached its end.

Tempo is an Indonesian weekly magazine that covers news and politics. It was founded by Goenawan Mohamad and Yusril Djalinus and the first edition was published in March 6, 1971.

History

New Order era

Under the New Order of President Suharto, Information Minister Harmoko banned the publishing of Tempo magazine, along with two others, citing them as a threat to national stability. Publication of Tempo resumed following Suharto's departure from office. In response to the ban, a number of journalists established the Alliance of Independent Journalists (Aliansi Jurnalis Independen).

Post New Order era

The magazine has continued its independent position, and on 27 June 2010 published a story about police corruption, based on leaked documents showing that six senior police officers had bank accounts containing millions of dollars, in one case more than US$10 million, on monthly salaries of around US$1600. A few days later (6 July) the magazine's editorial offices in central Jakarta were firebombed by two black-clad men on a motorcycle. Little damage ensued but the attack was widely presumed to be linked to the police.
