Tectonics

Tectonics (from the Late Latin tectonicus from the Greek τεκτονικός, "pertaining to building") is concerned with the processes which control the structure and properties of the Earth's crust, and its evolution through time. In particular, it describes the processes of mountain building, the growth and behavior of the strong, old cores of continents known as cratons, and the ways in which the relatively rigid plates that comprise the Earth's outer shell interact with each other. Tectonics also provides a framework to understand the earthquake and volcanic belts which directly affect much of the global population. Tectonic studies are important for understanding erosion patterns in geomorphology and as guides for the economic geologist searching for petroleum and metallic ores.

Main types of tectonic regime

Extensional tectonics

Extensional tectonics is associated with the stretching and thinning of the crust or lithosphere. This type of tectonics is found at divergent plate boundaries, in continental rifts, during and after a period of continental collision caused by the lateral spreading of the thickened crust formed, at releasing bends in strike-slip faults, in back-arc basins and on the continental end of passive margin sequences where a detachment layer is present.

Tectonic (record label)

Tectonic is a British electronic music label, founded and run by Rob Ellis (Pinch) which focuses primarily on Dubstep and its related genres. As one of the key founding dubstep labels, alongside Tempa, DMZ, Hyperdub, and Hotflush, Tectonic became a focal point for the Bristol scene, as well as introducing artists and releases that were among the first to bridge a gap between dubstep and techno.

Alongside seminal releases from artists such as Skream, Benga, Digital Mystikz & Joker, Tectonic has also been responsible for some of the scenes most highly acclaimed albums - particularly, 2562's Unbalance and Pinch's Underwater Dancehall.

CoreOS

CoreOS is an open-source lightweight operating system based on the Linux kernel and designed for providing infrastructure to clustered deployments, while focusing on automation, ease of applications deployment, security, reliability and scalability. As an operating system, CoreOS provides only the minimal functionality required for deploying applications inside software containers, together with built-in mechanisms for service discovery and configuration sharing.

CoreOS shares the foundations with Chrome OS and Chromium OS, by the means of using their common software development kit (SDK) as a base while adding new functionality and customizing it to support hardware used in servers.As of January 2015, CoreOS is actively developed, primarily by Alex Polvi, Brandon Philips and Michael Marineau, with its major features available as a stable release.

Overview

CoreOS provides no package manager as a way for distributing payload applications, requiring instead all applications to run inside their containers. Serving as a single control host, a CoreOS instance uses the underlying operating-system-level virtualization features of the Linux kernel to create and configure multiple containers that perform as isolated Linux systems. That way, resource partitioning between containers is performed through multiple isolated userspace instances, instead of using a hypervisor and providing full-fledged virtual machines. This approach relies on the Linux kernel's cgroups functionality, which provides namespace isolation and abilities to limit, account and isolate resource usage (CPU, memory, disk I/O, etc.) for the collections of processes.
