Tanggula Pass

The Tanggu La, Tangla Pass, or Tanggu Pass (Chinese: 唐古拉山口; pinyin: Tánggǔlā Shānkǒu) is a wide mountain pass over 5000 metres elevation in the People's Republic of China used by the Qinghai–Tibet Highway and Qinghai–Tibet Railway to cross the Tanggula Mountains. These mountains form part of the watershed separating the Yangtze River to the north and a zone of endorheic basins with internal drainage to the south. They also separate Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province.

The Qinghai–Tibet Highway reaches its highest elevation, 5,231 metres (17,162 feet) in Tanggu Pass at 32°52′24″N 91°55′03″E / 32.87333°N 91.91750°E / 32.87333; 91.91750. On August 24, 2005, rail track for the Qinghai–Tibet Railway was completed 28 kilometres to the WNW of the highway, reaching 5072 meters (16,640 feet) at 33°00′38″N 91°39′51″E / 33.01056°N 91.66417°E / 33.01056; 91.66417. Tanggula Railway Station 1 km from this summit is—at 5,068 metres—the world's highest, 255 m higher than Cóndor station, Peru.

Mountain pass

A mountain pass is a route through a mountain range or over a ridge. If following the lowest possible route, a pass is locally the highest point on that route. Since many of the world's mountain ranges have presented formidable barriers to travel, passes have been important since before recorded history, and have played a key role in trade, war, and migration. At lower elevations it may be called a hill pass. The highest pass is Thorong La, located in the Damodar Himal, north of the Annapurna range, Nepal.

Overview

Mountain passes make use of a gap, saddle or col (also sometimes a notch, the low point in a ridge). A topographic saddle is analogous to the mathematical concept of a saddle surface, with a saddle point marking the highest point between two valleys and the lowest point along a ridge. On a topographic map, passes are characterized by contour lines with an hourglass shape, which indicates a low spot between two higher points.

Passes are often found just above the source of a river, constituting a drainage divide. A pass may be very short, consisting of steep slopes to the top of the pass, or may be a valley many kilometres long, whose highest point might only be identifiable by surveying.

Mountain Pass, California

Mountain Pass is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is situated on Interstate 15 in the southeast mountainous desert region of the state approximately 15 miles (24 km) from the Nevada border at an elevation of 4,730 feet (1,440 m) - the highest point along I-15 between California and Nevada. It has a population of 30.

The most prominent feature of the town, and its reason for existence, is the Mountain Pass rare earth mine, an open pit mine for rare earth elements. The mine and its associated processing facilities, which are owned by Molycorp Minerals, are currently undergoing expansion and modernization, and returned to production in 2013. In 2015, Molycorp declared bankruptcy and the mine closed its doors again.

Mountain Pass

by: Dan Fogelberg

Well, I'm runnin' down this mountain pass at midnight;
Those truckers, they all flash their lights at me.
This highway ain't the very best companion,
'cause I know there's somewhere else I'd rather be.
The moonlight on the snow just sets me thinking
'Bout the way your smile shines upon your face.
And I know this ain't the last beer I'll be drinking
Before I reach my final resting place
Oh, I...
(Chorus)
...wish that I was in your arms a' sleeping,
Dreaming of the sweet love we just made,
But I'm runnin' down this mountain pass at midnight,
Wishin' I was in your arms again.
Oh my wheels are running hard against this mountain,
I finally crossed the Archuleta line.
Another hour and I'll be with my darlin'
To dry those lonesome tears that she's been cryin'
But I...
(Chorus)
I'm runnin' down this mountain pass at midnight;
Those truckers, they all flash their lights at me.
This highway ain't the very best companion,
'cause I know there's somewhere else I'd rather be.
Oh, I...
(Chorus)
I am runnin' down this mountain pass at midnight,
