Talons is the first solo EP recorded by Josh Dies. The album was released under DIES. The EP contains "re-imaginings" of two Showbread songs: "Never An Oceanographer" and "Age of Insects". A cover of the Sullivan song, "Dig Me Up" is also present on the EP.
On the track listing, "Never An Oceanographer" is misprinted as "Never An Oceangrpaher."
A claw is a curved, pointed appendage, found at the end of a toe or finger in most amniotes (mammals, reptiles, birds). However, the word "claw" is also often used in reference to an invertebrate. Somewhat similar fine hooked structures are found in arthropods such as beetles and spiders, at the end of the leg or tarsus for gripping a surface as the creature walks. Crabs', lobsters' and scorpions' pincers, or more formally, their "chelae", are sometimes called claws.
A true claw, (as opposed to a chela) is made of hard protein called keratin. Claws are used to catch and hold prey in carnivorous mammals such as cats and dogs, but may also be used for such purposes as digging, climbing trees, self-defense, and grooming, in those and other species.
Similar appendages that are flat and do not come to a sharp point are called nails instead. Claw-like projections that do not form at the end of digits, but spring from other parts of the foot are properly named spurs.
Claws of animals like tigers, lions, and bears were used in making items such as ornaments, pendants, and brooches.
"Talons" is the second single released by Bloc Party from their third album, Intimacy. It was announced on 8 September 2008 that the song would be released as a digital download to all those who had purchased the mp3 version of the band's album. The download was made available straight after the song's first play on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show on 9 September 2008. The song was physically released on 20 October 2008, one week prior to the album's full release. The song itself does not feature on the download-only album, but appeared on the physical release. It peaked at number 39 on the UK Singles Chart.
Talking about "Talons" on Bloc Party's official website, frontman Kele Okereke said:
Talons are a 6-piece instrumental band from Hereford. They formed in 2008, having previously played together in bands belonging to the Hereford music scene.
Talons formed in 2008 as a reincarnation of an older band, Kites, with an altered line up.
They signed to Big Scary Monsters in 2009, releasing their debut single, "The Pearl" in late summer. Once the band began to tour heavily, they released three singles in the buildup to a full-length record. An anthology of all Talons' work prior to Hollow Realm was released, entitled Commemorations.
The band recorded their debut album, Hollow Realm in the summer of 2010, with Tom Woodhead (Forward Russia) at the helm as producer. It was released in November 2010, the CD released by Big Scary Monsters and 12" vinyl by Topshelf Records. It received critical acclaim, notably by Mike Diver for BBC Music and Drowned In Sound. The band then spent the next couple of years touring around Europe to promote Hollow Realm.
The band recorded their second album in July 2013, due for release in August 2014.
