"Mr.Mr." is a Korean-language song by South Korean girl group Girls' Generation, released on February 28, 2014, as the title track from their fourth Korean EP, Mr.Mr.. The song was produced by American production team The Underdogs.

Background and release

"Mr.Mr.", is an electropop dance song which incorporates elements of R&B, produced by the American record production team The Underdogs, who have also worked with Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown.

The concept for "Mr.Mr." was described to be a "classy, mystery girl" rather than "sexy". SM Entertainment stated, "We're going to show a transformation that only Girls' Generation can show." The dance for the title song "Mr.Mr." is choreographed by choreographer Jillian Meyer, who has worked with Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, and Kylie Minogue.

A Japanese version of Mr.Mr. was initially released on March 21, 2014, and later on as a track in Girls' Generation's The Best.

"Mr.Mr." was considered by Time to be one of the "Top 25 Best Songs of 2014". Journalist Lily Rothman wrote, "Fans of K-pop juggernaut Girls' Generation (a.k.a. SNSD) won't be disappointed by their latest dance-friendly single, and the addition of a scratchy electronic bass line and a hint of darkness should even attract listeners who don't dig their usual bubblegum sound."

Mr.Mr (Hangul: 미스터미스터; RR: Miseuteo Miseuteo, often stylized as MR.MR) is a South Korean boy group who debuted in 2012 under the management of TH E&M with their first digital single 'Who's That Girl' on October 4, 2012. The group consists of Jin, Doyeon, Changjae, Tey, Sanghyun and Jaemin.

History

2012—2013 : Debut with "Who's That Girl" and additional member of Jiwon

The group released their digital single and music video for 'Who's That Girl' on October 4, 2012 and started promotion on October 5 on music program Music Bank. A few days on October 12 the dance practice video for 'Who's That Girl' was released.

On January 20, 2013 on the official YouTube page a teaser was released for the group's second single 'Highway'. The single and music video for the song was released on the 24th. "Highway" is produced by Brian Kierulf & Joshua Michael Schwartz, the same producers who created the group’s debut track "Who’s That Girl". They started their comeback promotions on M! Countdown the same day.

Mr.Mr. is the fourth extended play (EP) by South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. The EP was released on February 24, 2014 by S.M. Entertainment and KT Music.

Composition

Mr.Mr. is composed of six songs, focusing on "dazzling" electropop and R&B-pop. According to member Seohyun, the EP incorporates "exciting" R&B sounds with "cool, simple" melodies. The opening track, "Mr.Mr.", was produced by The Underdogs, who have worked with several American recording artists such as Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears. It is an electropop and R&B-pop song that mixes a hip hop beat and EDM-inspired buildups. The second song, "Goodbye," is a pop-rock number that is instrumented by snare drums and hi-hats. "Europa" (Korean: 유로파), meanwhile, draws from retro late-1980s Europop and disco-pop genres.

"Wait a Minute" was described as a "bouncy" jazz-pop track with "beautiful [harmonizations]." "Back Hug" (Korean: 백허그) was written and composed by Norwegian songwriters, Ingrid Skretting and Jesper Borgen, and co-written by Cho Yun-kyoung. Skretting previously worked with S.M. Entertainment and composed three songs for Girls' Generation's debut album, Girls' Generation. The songs features a "simple, snappy" R&B production that finds the girls request, "Please cover my heart." The EP concludes with "Soul"—an uptempo Korean version of the group's first original Chinese song, "Find Your Soul", released in 2013. The song was used as the theme song for commercials for the Korean MMORPG video game, Blade & Soul, in Chinese-language markets across Asia.
