"Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of American group The Four Preps, which was originally recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. It attained worldwide fame after being covered by Soft Cell in 1981 and has since been covered by numerous groups and artists.
American artist Gloria Jones recorded the original version of "Tainted Love", which was written and produced by Ed Cobb. It was the B-side to the 1965 single "My Bad Boy's Comin' Home", which was a commercial flop, failing to chart in either the US or the UK. Before Jones recorded the song, Cobb had offered it to The Standells, which he managed and produced, but they rejected it.
However, in 1973, British club DJ Richard Searling purchased a copy of the almost decade-old single while on a trip to the United States. The track's Motown-influenced sound (featuring a fast tempo, horns, electric rhythm guitar and female backing vocals) fit in perfectly with the music favoured by those involved in the UK's Northern Soul club scene of the early 1970s, and Searling popularised the song at the Northern Soul club Va Va’s in Bolton, and later, at Wigan Casino.
I've ran away for too long
My shoes' torn
I fought hard
And move all this camp the light on to come home [? ]
I'm so tired
And now I'm in the car with no path
Can't get back to where we started
Feel just like a bad movie, ohhh
Don't wanna argue
Please, no more casualties
See now, girl, I realize you're the one for me
Take me back, I'm yours
So I'm raising my love flag
I surrender my love
I know you're the one
I'm so tired of running for miles, yeah
There was a war within the heart
Fought you too long, now I give up
So I'm raising
So I'm raising
So I'm raising my love flag
Keep on hurting your feelings [? ]
Now I'm bleeding for the mistakes that I made
Knew one day that I would pay for starting this whole thing
This four minute line's reunite, water broken
I'll do whatever, girl, just take me back
I want you to know I can't let you go, no I don't
Don't wanna argue
Please, no more casualties
See now, girl, I realize you're the one for me
Take me back, I'm yours
So I'm raising my love flag
I surrender my love
I know you're the one
I'm so tired of running for miles, yeah
There was a war within the heart
Fought you too long, now I give up
So I'm raising
So I'm raising
So I'm raising my love flag
You know I can't go and face alone without you here with me
But, damn, I wiped it
Girl, I'll risk it all to make sure that I can stay
I got my different man not like before, ohh
And girl, I'll be waiting until you return
So I'm raising my love flag
I surrender my love
I know you're the one
I'm so tired of running for miles, yeah
There was a war within the heart
Fought you too long, now I give up
So I'm raising
So I'm raising
So I'm raising my love flag
So I'm raising
So I'm raising
So I'm raising my love flag
So I'm raising
So I'm raising
