Tai Sui

Tai Sui (Chinese: 太歲; pinyin: Tàisuì) refers to stars directly opposite to Jupiter. They influence the Chinese zodiac, and are involved in religious Taoism and Feng Shui.

Description

In the Chinese zodiac, there are sixty (originally 12 corresponding to the Earthly stems, later popularly believed to be 60, one for each stem-branch combination) heavenly generals (zh:六十甲子神列表) who assist the Jade Emperor in taking charge of the well-being of the Mortal World. Each of them takes turn to be in charge for a year. Due to most of them having a military background, they are normally known as the Military Generals, or as the Cycle Gods. Each of their features and weapons signifies the well-being of that year. For example, if the Tai Sui of the year is one who holds a pen, it signifies political unrest for that particular year. On the other hand, if the Tai Sui of the year holds a spear or sword it signifies the need to work hard and excel for that year.

Practises

In Taoism, those whose Chinese Zodiac is offended, or by their sign conflict or clash with the Tai Sui of the year, are advised to conduct a prayer session with a Taoist priest to ask for blessings in obtaining peace and good fortune throughout the year. Talismans thought to protect against Tai Sui are sold in many areas.

Tai (elephant)

Tai (born November 4, 1968) is an Asian elephant best known for playing Bo Tat in the film Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), Vera in Larger than Life (1996) and Rosie in Water for Elephants (2011). Tai is owned by Have Trunk Will Travel, Inc., a privately funded organization that generates income through elephant rides, shows and events, as well as film and commercial appearances.

Career

Tai's first film appearance was a minor role in The Jungle Book (1994), where she scares off some poachers. Tai followed this up playing the major role of Bo Tat in Operation Dumbo Drop in 1995. The American Humane Association rated the treatment of animals in the film as acceptable. The scene in which Tai is sedated she is actually just obeying her trainers instructions to lie down. The sounds of her snoring in the film is not actually coming from Tai, but was dubbed in during post-production. All scenes that show Tai in danger were carefully staged, and the boat in which she travels in the film was pre-tested to make sure it would support her 8,000 pound weight. To ensure she remained healthy, all of Tai's food, drinking water, and even her bathing water, was shipped from the U.S. to Thailand, where filming was taking place.

Tai (comics)

Tai is a fictional character in the Marvel Comics universe. A Cambodian, Tai was something of a mentor for the New Warriors in the first 25 issues of their first series.

Fictional character biography

Tai is an elderly Cambodian mystic who was indirectly responsible for the formation of the New Warriors. Tai was born into a cult called the Dragon's Breadth. Her people derive mystical energy from a well inside their temple that was a nexus into various alternate dimensions. The temple is constructed around the nexus point where vast amounts of mystic energy are constantly released. Throughout the centuries Tai's people absorb the energy from the well. They devise a detailed program of interbreeding the goal of which was for each successive generation to be able to tap into the energies of the well more than the previous generation had and that eventually one generation would use that power to rule the world (this plan was called 'The Pact'). Tai's generation are actually able to harness the energies of the well. Tai's generation is led to believe that their generation were the ones who would rule the world. Tai refuses to share powers and slays everyone in the cult but six maiden brides and a series of guards for the temple.

Sui, Balochistan

Sui (Urdu: سوی‎) is a sub-district of Dera Bugti District in Balochistan, Pakistan. The Sui gas field is located near Sui town.

Location

Town of sui is at the corner where the provinces of Baluchistan, Sindh and Punjab meet. About 9 km from Punjab, 10 km from Sindh. River indus flows 25 km to the East of it. It is 40 km south of Dera Bugti. Sui has gas compression facilities from where Natural gas is pipelined to nearby Punjab and Sindh towns. It is also pipelined to Quetta the largest city of Balochistan about 200 miles away.

Administration

The town of Sui serves as the administrative centre of Sui tehsil, a subdivision of the district, the town of Sui itself functions as a Union Council. It is at the corner where the province of Sindh and Punjab meet. About 6 miles from Punjab, 7 Miles from Sindh. River indus flows 20 miles to the East of it.

Sui (state)

Suí (simplified Chinese: 随; traditional Chinese: 隨; pinyin: Suí) was a Zhou dynasty vassal state in the Han River Basin in modern Suizhou, Hubei, China. Its ruling house had the surname Ji (姬), and held the noble rank of Hou (侯), roughly comparable to a marquess.

History

During the initial stages of the Spring and Autumn Period from 771 BCE, the power of Sui’s neighbor the State of Chu grew considerably. At the same time Sui also expanded and became leader of the various vassal states whose leaders bore the surname Ji known as the Hanyang Ji Vassals (汉阳诸姬).

The Zuo Zhuan records that in 706 BCE King Wu of Chu invaded the State of Sui on the grounds that the state’s minister Ji Liang (季梁) had halted the king’s army. Not long afterwards, the Sui military commander received Chu Prime Minister Dou Bobi (鬬伯比) who concluded that given the opportunity Sui would conspire against Chu. Two years later in the summer of 704 BCE following Sui’s non-appearance at a meeting of the vassal states called at Shenlu (沈鹿), King Wu of Chu personally led his army in an attack on Sui. Thereafter Sui was defeated at the Battle of Suqi (速杞之战). The state's leader fled whilst Chu minister Dou Dan (鬬丹) captured the Marquess of Sui's chariot along with the chariot division military commander. However, at that time Chu did not have sufficient power to annex Sui and peace followed in the same year.
