A tadpole (also called a pollywog or porwigle in British English) is the larval stage in the life cycle of an amphibian, particularly that of a frog or toad. They are usually wholly aquatic, though some species have tadpoles that are terrestrial. When first hatched from the egg they have a more or less globular body, a laterally compressed tail and internal or external gills. As they grow they undergo metamorphosis, during which process they grow limbs, develop lungs and reabsorb the tail. Most tadpoles are herbivorous and during metamorphosis the mouth and internal organs are rearranged to prepare for an adult carnivorous lifestyle.
Having no hard parts, it might be expected that fossil tadpoles would not exist. However, traces of biofilms have been preserved and fossil tadpoles have been found dating back to the Miocene. Tadpoles are eaten in some parts of the world and are mentioned in folk tales and used as a symbol in ancient Egyptian numerals.
The name "tadpole" is from Middle English taddepol, made up of the elements tadde, "toad", and pol, "head" (modern English "poll"). Similarly, "polliwog" is from Middle English polwygle, made up of the same pol, "head" and wiglen, "to wiggle".
Tadpoles is the third album by the Bonzo Dog Band. It is largely a compilation of their work from the television show Do Not Adjust Your Set, on which they were the house band. The US version of the album had a track list slightly different from that of the UK version: the US version removed "I'm the Urban Spaceman" and added "Readymades" the B-side of their follow-up single "Mr. Apollo".
The UK version was reissued on vinyl by Sunset Records in the early 1970s, re-titled "I'm the Urban Spaceman".
In 2007 the album was reissued on CD with its original title and artwork, by EMI with five bonus tracks.
The original LP sleeve had seven holes cut out of the front cover, and multiple images printed on an insert card (or inner sleeve of the US version) helped listeners to visualize what band members were thinking by moving the card back and forth.
Tadpoles are an American psychedelic rock band, formed in 1990 in New York City by Todd Parker (guitars/vocals), Michael Kite Audino (drums) and Josh Bracken (bass.) In 1992, Nick Kramer (guitars/vocals), David Max (bass) and Andrew Jackson (guitars) of the fledgling Manhattan group, Hit, joined the Tadpoles after putting Hit on hiatus.
In 1993 Kite and Jackson left the group, which relocated to Hoboken, New Jersey, where Parker formed Bakery Records. In 1996, Adam Boyette (drums) joined Tadpoles to complete what would be their final line-up. Parker announced the Tadpoles would be going on an “indefinite hiatus” in 2000, and the group disbanded. Kramer, Max and Boyette reformed Hit and continued on.
Todd Parker originally formed the group while living in Champaign, Illinois in 1985 as an outlet for mostly solo 4-track recordings. These recordings were released on the cassettes, Ham & Eggs (1987); Limousines, Sardines, Dinosaurs (1988); Beautiful Music For Ugly Children (1989); and William’s Doll (1990). New York University (NYU) filmmaker, Michael Kite Audino became increasingly more involved in the recordings, so Parker and Kite decided to form a live version of the Tadpoles in New York City in 1990. They released one more cassette album Ride The Soul (1991) which featured their initial NYC recordings.
By a waterfall
I'm calling "Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo"
We can share it all
Beneath a ceiling of blue
We'll spend a heavenly day
Here where the whispering waters play
There's a whippoorwill
He's calling "Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo"
By a waterfall he's dreaming too
There's a magic melody
Mother Nature sings to me
Beside a waterfall with you
All together now:
By a waterfall
I'm calling "Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo" (Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo)
We can share it all
Beneath a ceiling of blue (Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo)
We'll spend a heavenly day
Here where the whispering waters play
There's a whippoorwill
He's calling "Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo" (Yoo-hoo-hoo-hoo)
By a waterfall he's dreaming too (He's dreaming too)
There's a magic melody
Mother Nature sings to me
Beside a waterfall with you
With you
Thinking only of you
Wanting only to be with you
Needing desperately to be only with you
