Azteca (multimedia conglomerate)

Azteca, previously TV Azteca, is a Mexican multimedia conglomerate owned by Grupo Salinas. It is the second largest mass media company in Mexico after Televisa. As of 2011, it competes in Mexico with Televisa. It owns two television networks, Azteca 7 and Azteca Trece, and operates a third, Proyecto 40. All three of these networks have repeaters and affiliates in most major and minor cities.

TV Azteca also operates Azteca 13 Internacional, reaching 13 countries in Central and South America, and part of the Azteca América network in the United States. Its flagship program is the newscast Hechos.

History

Azteca was founded on July 18, 1993, when two of the three networks and all of the repeater stations owned by Imevisión, a state agency, were auctioned off by the Mexican government. Imevisión also owned channel 22, which was transferred to Conaculta. On July 18, 1993, Mexico's Finance Ministry, Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (SHCP) announced that Radiotelevisora del Centro, a group controlled by Ricardo Salinas Pliego, was the winner of the auction process to acquire the "state-owned media package". The winning bid amounted to US$645 million.

Azteca 7

Azteca 7 or El 7 is a Mexican network owned by TV Azteca, with affiliate stations all over Mexico all of which are owned and operated by TV Azteca. Azteca 7 uses Mexico, DF's XHIMT as its flagship station and its channel as part of its name. Azteca 7's programming is available in HD and is available where affiliates are broadcasting in digital television. Azteca 7 programming is available in Mexico through SKY México.

XHDF-TDT

XHDF-TDT is the over the air Azteca 13 network flagship station in Mexico City (Channel 13 analog and Channel 25 digital). Azteca 13 can be seen in most major cities in Mexico through its affiliates most of which are owned and operated by TV Azteca. XHDF provides HD programming to affiliates and cable and satellite viewers. Azteca 13 can also be seen on DirecTV in both Latin America and the United States. Azteca 13 also provides the United States Azteca America network with programming which sometimes can be seen simultaneously.

History

XHDF started as an independent broadcaster in July 1968. In 1972 it became a state-owned station after it was expropriated. In 1983 it became one of three stations originally owned and operated by the newly-formed Imevisión, the Mexican public broadcaster (XHIMT-TV and XEIMT-TV were the others). In 1993, it and XHIMT became part of the new commercial Grupo Salinas, when the Mexican government dissolved Imevisión and sold most of its assets.

Azteca (Spanish pronunciation: [asˈteka]; originally known as Azteca América from July 28, 2001 until May 2014) is an American Spanish-language broadcast television network that is owned by the Azteca International Corporation subsidiary of Azteca S.A. de C.V.

Headquartered in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, California, the network's programming is aimed at Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States and relies primarily on access to programming from TV Azteca's three television national networks in Mexico, including a library with over 200,000 hours of original programming and news content from local bureaus in 32 Mexican states. Its programming consists of a mix of telenovelas, sports, reality and variety series, news programming, and feature films (both Spanish-dubbed versions of American films and imported films produced in Spanish-speaking countries).

Azteca is available on cable and satellite television throughout most of the country (primarily carried on dedicated Spanish language programming tiers, except in some markets with an over-the-air affiliate), with local stations in over 60 markets with large Hispanic and Latino populations (reaching 89% of the Hispanic population in the U.S.; approximately 43,396,000 people, or 38% of the country's total population). The network also distributes a national cable network feed that is distributed directly to cable, satellite and IPTV providers as an alternative method of distribution in markets without either the availability or the demand for a locally based owned-and-operated or affiliate station. The network's flagship station KAZA-TV in Los Angeles is the highest-rated station in Azteca's portfolio.

Azteca (genus)

Azteca is a strictly Neotropical genus of ants in the subfamily Dolichoderinae. The genus is very diverse and contains around 84 extant species and two fossil species. They are essentially arboreal and many species have mutualistic associations with particular plant species, where the genus Cecropia presents the most conspicuous association.
