T. L. Taylor

T.L. Taylor is an American sociologist and professor. Taylor specialises in researching the culture of gaming and online communities, in particular, eSports, and MMOGs such as EverQuest and World of Warcraft.

Education

She received her Ph.D. (2000) in sociology from Brandeis University. Her dissertation, Living Digitally: Embodiment in Virtual Environments, explored design and embodiment in MUDs and graphical virtual worlds. Taylor is currently a Professor in Comparative Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During 2012-2013 she was a Visiting Researcher with the Social Media group at Microsoft Research New England. Previously, she was an Associate Professor at the Center for Computer Games Research at the IT University of Copenhagen.

Research

Taylor has been noted as providing insight into professional eSports, the dynamics of ethnic stereotyping in virtual worlds, the relationship between the self-expression of players in a virtual world and designers' imperatives, and as challenging the perceived dichotomy between online and offline experience. Her first book, Play Between Worlds (MIT Press, 2006) focused on the massively multiplayer online game EverQuest. It explored the social aspects of play, powergaming, gender, and the creative practices of players (including intellectual property implications). Taylor's second book, Raising the Stakes (MIT Press, 2012), examined professional computer gaming. She visited the World Cyber Games, as well as a number of other tournaments and did interviews with a variety of participants in professional competitive gaming. The book looks at a number of topics in eSports, including their status as sports, rulesets and competitive play, gender, and spectatorship and performance. In addition to her work on these subjects, she has also spoken and written on doing ethnographic work that spans both online and offline sites.

Töölö

Töölö (Swedish: Tölö) is the collective name for the neighbourhoods Etu-Töölö (Swedish: Främre Tölö; lit. Front Töölö) and Taka-Töölö (Swedish: Bortre Tölö; lit. Rear Töölö) in Helsinki, Finland. The neighbourhoods are located next to the city centre, occupying the western side of the Helsinki Peninsula.

Etu-Töölö, the southern neighbourhood, borders Kamppi and is the location of the Finnish Parliament House. Taka-Töölö, the northern neighbourhood, borders Meilahti and Laakso. Contrary to popular belief, Töölö is not the official name of any district or neighbourhood in Helsinki.

Transform, clipping, and lighting

Transform, clipping, and lighting (T&L or sometimes TCL) is a term used in computer graphics.

Overview

Transformation is the task of producing a two-dimensional view of a three-dimensional scene. Clipping means only drawing the parts of the scene that will be present in the picture after rendering is completed. Lighting is the task of altering the colour of the various surfaces of the scene on the basis of lighting information.

Hardware

Hardware T&L had been used by arcade game system boards since 1993, and by home video game consoles since the Nintendo 64's Reality Coprocessor GPU in 1996.Personal computers implemented T&L in software until 1999, as it was believed faster CPUs would be able to keep pace with demands for ever more realistic rendering. However, 3D computer games of the time were producing increasingly complex scenes and detailed lighting effects much faster than the increase of CPU processing power.

Nvidia's GeForce 256 was released in late 1999 and introduced hardware support for T&L to the consumer PC graphics card market. It had faster vertex processing not only due to the T&L hardware, but also because of a cache that avoided having to process the same vertex twice in certain situations. While DirectX 7.0 (particularly Direct3D 7) was the first release of that API to support hardware T&L, OpenGL had supported it much longer and was typically the purview of older professionally oriented 3D accelerators which were designed for computer-aided design (CAD) instead of games.

Samoan tālā

The tālā is the currency of Samoa. It is divided into 100 sene. The terms tālā and sene are the equivalents or transliteration of the English words dollar and cent, in the Samoan language.

The tālā was introduced in 1967, following the country's political independence from New Zealand in 1962. Until that time, Samoa had used the pound, with coins from New Zealand and its own banknotes. The tālā replaced the pound at a rate of 2 tālā = 1 pound, and was therefore equal to the New Zealand dollar. The tālā remained equal to the New Zealand dollar until 1975.

The symbol WS$ is still used for the tālā, representing the country's previous name Western Samoa, used up to 1997, when the word Western was officially removed and the country became known as just Samoa. Therefore, the symbol SAT,ST and T appear to be in use as well.

Sometimes figures are written with the dollar sign in front, followed by "tālā". e.g. $100 tālā.

The Samoan currency is issued and regulated by the Central Bank of Samoa.
