System Shock 2

System Shock 2 is a first-person shooter action role-playing survival horror video game for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux, designed by Ken Levine and co-developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios. Originally intended to be a standalone title, its story was changed during production into a sequel to the 1994 PC game System Shock; the alterations were made when Electronic Arts—who owned the System Shock franchise rights—signed on as publisher. System Shock 2 was released on August 11, 1999, in North America.

The game takes place on board a starship in a cyberpunk depiction of 2114. The player assumes the role of a soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of combat and exploration. It incorporates role-playing system elements, in which the player can develop skills and traits, such as hacking and psionic abilities.

System Shock 2 received positive reviews, but failed to meet commercial sales expectations. Many critics later determined that the game was highly influential in subsequent game design, particularly on first-person shooters, and considered it far ahead of its time. It has been included in several "greatest games of all time" lists. In 2007, Irrational Games released a spiritual successor to the System Shock series, titled BioShock, to critical acclaim and strong sales. System Shock 2 had been in intellectual property limbo following closure of Looking Glass Studios, but Night Dive Studios were able to secure the rights to the property in 2013 to produce an updated version for modern personal computers. OtherSide Entertainment announced in December 2015 that they have been licensed the rights from Night Dive Studios to produce a sequel, System Shock 3.

System Shock

System Shock is a 1994 first-person action role-playing video game developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems. It was directed by Doug Church with Warren Spector serving as producer. The game is set aboard a space station in a cyberpunk vision of the year 2072. Assuming the role of a nameless hacker, the player attempts to hinder the plans of a malevolent artificial intelligence called SHODAN.

System Shock's 3D engine, physics simulation and complex gameplay have been cited as both innovative and influential. The developers sought to build on the emergent gameplay and immersive environments of their previous games, Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss and Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds, by streamlining their mechanics into a more "integrated whole".

Critics praised System Shock and hailed it as a major breakthrough in its genre. It was later placed on multiple hall of fame lists. The game was a moderate commercial success, with sales exceeding 170,000 copies, but Looking Glass ultimately lost money on the project. A sequel, System Shock 2, was released by Looking Glass Studios and offshoot developer Irrational Games in 1999. The 2000 game Deus Ex and the 2007 game BioShock are spiritual successors to the two games.

System Shock is a Swedish/Greek heavy metal band. Formed by guitarist Lukas Bergis in 2003, the group has released three albums.

History

System Shock was formed in Sweden by guitarist/producer Lukas Bergis and shortly thereafter released its debut through Karmageddon Media. The drums on the recording were played by George Kollias, who shortly thereafter joined Nile. Two band members joined Athens based gothic metallers Nightfall in 2010. The band has been reported to be working on its new album with a release date in mid-2013 The band describe their music as Sci-Fi Metal, while lyrics often refer to themes such as Space Exploration and Science Fiction. In 2013 the band confirmed that Anorimoi guitarist, John McRis, who had been credited as a recording engineer in their latest two releases and had been rehearsing with the band since 2009 would join as a full-time member, while Tony Paananen was confirmed as their new drummer.

System Shock is an original novel written by Justin Richards and based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It features the Fourth Doctor, Sarah and Harry and is followed by the BBC Books Past Doctor Adventures novel Millennium Shock, also by Richards.

Plot

It is 1998, and the information age is about to take off. However, mysterious events are plaguing London. A prominent spy is killed. A hostage situation is bizarrely resolved. The Doctor receives a computer disc from a dead man. And to top it all off, it seems that an alien race is planning a takeover using Earth's ever expanding computer technology.
