A symbol is a person or a concept that represents, stands for or suggests another idea, visual image, belief, action or material entity. Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, ideas or visual images and are used to convey other ideas and beliefs. For example, a red octagon may be a symbol for "STOP". On a map, a blue line might represent a river. Numerals are symbols for numbers. Alphabetic letters may be symbols for sounds. Personal names are symbols representing individuals. A red rose may symbolize love and compassion. The variable x in a mathematical equation may symbolize the position of a particle in space.
In cartography, an organized collection of symbols forms a legend for a map.
The word derives from the Greek symbolon (σύμβολον) meaning token or watchword. It is an amalgam of syn- "together" + bole "a throwing, a casting, the stroke of a missile, bolt, beam." The sense evolution in Greek is from "throwing things together" to "contrasting" to "comparing" to "token used in comparisons to determine if something is genuine." Hence, "outward sign" of something. The meaning "something which stands for something else" was first recorded in 1590, in Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene.
'Symbols", was a Brazilian heavy metal band which began in 1997 and dissolved in 2004. It featured vocals from both Eduardo and Tito Falaschi.
After two very successful releases, Symbols (self-titled) and Call To The End, the band received rising popularity. But as Edu Falaschi joined Angra in 2001 and Tito and Arjonas left, the band nearly broke up. But Rodrigo Mello (Drummer) and Demian Tiguez (Guitar) produced and released in 2004 the album "Faces" with Demian as a lead singer. For this album the bass player Cesar Tallarico joined the band with the keyboardist Fabrizio Di Sarno. In 2005, with a new label, their first two albums were remastered and released.
The tenth album by German industrial group KMFDM is titled with a string of five unpronounceable, non-alphabetic symbols (see cover art), but usually cataloged as Symbols. It was released on September 23, 1997, on Wax Trax!/TVT Records. A digitally remastered reissue of Symbols was released in 2007 on Metropolis Records.
Recorded in Seattle, Washington, Symbols marked the introduction of Tim Skold. While his contribution to this album was as a guest, he would become a full-fledged member for Adios and Attak. Sascha Konietzko, the frontman of KMFDM, said the title had no special meaning, and was just an idea for a title the group had very early on, before a single album had been released. En Esch said the idea for the album title came from the symbols used for curses in comic books. The symbols appear in the printed lyrics of "Down and Out"; the corresponding point in the song is covered with a censor-like beep in the song, and is replaced with "(SYMBOLS)" on the official KMFDM lyrics archive.
Refused is a Swedish hardcore punk band originating from Umeå and formed in 1991. Refused is composed of vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, guitarist Kristofer Steen, drummer David Sandström, and bassist Magnus Flagge. Guitarist Jon Brännström was a member from 1994, through reunions, until he was fired in late-2014. Their lyrics are often of a non-conformist and politically far-left nature.
On January 9, 2012, the band announced their long-awaited reunion (which was also highly contested considering the band's original and explicit declaration to never reunite), confirming shows at Coachella, Rock am Ring, Ruisrock, Roskilde Festival, Groezrock, Way Out West Festival, Sonisphere Festival (Cancelled), Download Festival, Rock for People, Primavera Sound, Hellfest, Fuji Rock Festival, Øyafestivalen, Pukkelpop, Resurrection. After embarking on a world tour for nearly a year, Refused went on hiatus again in 2012, but announced another reunion in November 2014.
The band released five EPs and three full-length albums before originally splitting up in 1998, and released their fourth full-length album Freedom on the Epitaph Records label on June 26, 2015. "Elektra" was released as the first single from the comeback album on April 27, 2015.
Refused, also known as Santa Dog '99, was released by the Residents towards the end of 1999 to celebrate the end of the millennium (using the popular, rather than mathematically correct, impression of the end of the millennium). The Residents had previously reworked the song "Fire" (aka "Santa Dog") a number of times since the release of the original single in 1972, ostensibly to give an idea of where they were musically at the time. This release compiled the past versions, a new version that had been previously available only as a download, and a number of other variations on the theme. It was released by Ralph America in a limited run of 1333 copies (1999 minus 1333 is 666, the Number of the Beast).
How come your symbols of freedom only restrict?
How come your symbols of pride to me ain't worth nothing?
How come your symbols of freedom only restrict?
How come your symbols of pride to me ain't worth nothing?
How come your symbols of freedom only restrict?
How come your symbols of pride to me ain't worth nothing?
How come your symbols of freedom only restrict?
How come your symbols of pride to me ain't worth nothing?
What better way to oppress us than to make us safe
To make us node in approval to the system we created
Our freedom, our bill of right, just assurance to make us abide
To make us serve their purposes and to serve our time
But I will destroy a system that's build on greed
I will destroy tradition that makes us bleed
I will shut down the power of all those who have lied to me
I will defy their image of what they want me to be
But I will destroy a system that's build on greed
I will destroy tradition that makes us bleed
I will shut down the power of all those who have lied to me
I will defy their image of what they expect me to be
How come your symbols of freedom only restrict?
How come your symbols of pride to me ain't worth nothing?
How come your symbols of freedom only restrict?
