Sydney Smith

Sydney Smith (3 June 1771 – 22 February 1845) was an English wit, writer and Anglican cleric.

Life

Born in Woodford, Essex, England, Smith was the son of merchant Robert Smith (1739–1827) and Maria Olier (1750–1801), who suffered from epilepsy. His father, described as "a man of restless ingenuity and activity", "very clever, odd by nature, but still more odd by design", owned, at various times, 19 different estates in England.

Smith himself attributed much of his own lively personality to his French blood, his maternal grandfather having been a French Protestant refugee (a Huguenot) named Olier. He was the second of four brothers and one sister, all remarkable for their talents. Two of the brothers, Robert Percy (known as "Bobus") and Cecil, were sent to Eton, but he was sent with the youngest to Winchester College, where he rose to be captain of the school. He and his brother so distinguished themselves that their school-fellows signed a round-robin "refusing to try for the college prizes if the Smiths were allowed to contend for them any more".

Sydney John Smith

Sydney John Smith, PC (September 23, 1892 - July 15, 1976), was a Canadian politician, farmer, rancher and businessman who served as Speaker of the Canadian Senate from 1966 to 1968.

Life and work

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Smith was educated at Lisgar Collegiate Institute before moving to Saskatchewan with his family. He studied at New York University through correspondence courses and played football with the Regina Roughriders as well as working as an automobile salesman.

He eventually settled in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan where he became an alderman and then mayor from 1921 to 1925.

Smith attempted to win a seat in the Saskatchewan legislature as a Liberal in 1934 but was defeated.

He then moved to Kamloops, British Columbia where he raised cattle and grew hops as well as involving himself in selling automobile sales and heavy equipment. He organized several businesses, Sydney Smith Ltd., Sydney Smith U Drive Ltd., Sydmar Estates Ltd., and the Highway Equipment Co. Ltd., among others, and held a number of directorships in other firms.

Sydney Smith (composer)

Sydney Smith (also known under the pseudonyms Paul Beaumont and Victor Delacour, July 14, 1839 – March 3, 1889), was a leading English pianist and composer in Victorian England. Sydney Smith grew up in a family of musicians. His father was the head of a music school and often gave concerts with his two sons Sydney and Boyton.

Smith was born in Dorchester, Dorset. He studied piano in Leipzig with Moscheles and Plaidy, cello with Grützmacher, and composition with Rietz. He returned to England in 1858, settling the following year in London, where he remained until his death, highly regarded as a teacher and composer. He composed or transcribed about 400 works for the piano. These were extremely popular in salons in England in the 19th century, particularly the early works. Many pieces were issued both as solo pieces and as piano duets.

His earliest compositions are piano accompaniments to three concertina pieces by Richard Blagrove. Apart from these, he composed only for solo piano until the last few years of his life, when he wrote a small handful of songs.

Sydney Howard Smith

Sydney Howard Smith (3 February 1872 – 27 March 1947) was a British tennis and badminton player.

Sydney Smith was the first All England Badminton Men's Singles champion in 1900 (the same year he competed in the Gentlemen's Singles final at Wimbledon, losing to Reginald Doherty). Smith and partner Frank Riseley won the Gentlemen's Doubles title at Wimbledon in 1902 and 1906. He was a member of the British Davis Cup team in 1905 and 1906. Tennis analyst Karoly Mazak ranked Smith as the World No. 2 player in 1899.

Sydney Smith (Illustrator)

Sydney Smith is a Canadian illustrator of children's books. He was awarded the 2015 Governor General’s Award For Illustrated Children’s Books for Sidewalk Flowers, a wordless picture book which he illustrated with author JonArno Lawson.

Education

Smith studied drawing and printmaking at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was while studying there that he realized his interest for illustrating children's books.

Career

Smith has worked for two different publishing houses in his career as an illustrator: Nimbus Publishing and Groundwood Books. In addition to his work as an illustrator for children's books, Smith has also done graphic design work for Canadian musical acts Hey Rosetta! and Old Man Luedecke.
