Swimfin

Swimfins, swim fins, fins or flippers are finlike accessories worn on the foot or leg and made from rubber, plastic or combinations of these materials, to aid movement through the water in water sports activities such as swimming, bodyboarding, bodysurfing, kneeboarding, riverboarding, underwater hockey, underwater rugby and various other types of underwater diving.

Swimfins help the wearer to move through water more efficiently, as human feet are too small and inappropriately shaped to provide much thrust, especially when the wearer is carrying equipment that increases hydrodynamic drag. Very long fins and monofins used by freedivers as a means of underwater propulsion do not require high frequency leg movement. This improves efficiency and helps to minimize oxygen consumption. Short, stiff-bladed fins are effective for short bursts of acceleration and maneuvering, and are useful for bodysurfing.

History

Swim (Caribou album)

Swim is an album by Caribou, released in April 2010. It was his first album featuring new material since the 2008 Polaris Music Prize-winning Andorra. It featured great changes in comparison to its predecessor, deviating from the psychedelic pop sound and taking more influences from various kinds of electronic dance music, especially deep house and minimal techno.

Dan Snaith, the creative force behind Caribou, said that playing more DJ gigs, such as those at London's Plastic People, influenced him to embrace dance music and a greater range of frequencies in his music. It was songs written for these DJ sets which ultimately came to comprise Swim, though Snaith never originally intended for them to find their way into a Caribou album. Snaith says his work ethic on this album led to about 700 leftover songs, some unfinished, which did not make the album; Swim was, according to Snaith "pretty much me getting up every day and wanting to work on music. Working constantly on it. Making loads and loads and loads of music and then just sifting through to find the bits that I like".

Swim (Emily's Army EP)

Swim is the fourth EP by the American rock band Emily's Army, released on July 22, 2014, through Burger Records and Rise Records. The album is the bands first release on Burger Records and last on Rise Records. The Album was produced by Drummer Joey Armstrong's father, Billie Joe Armstrong. It is the bands last release under their former name "Emily's Army" after changing their name to "Swimmers" in late 2014, and later "Swmrs" in late 2015 It is also the last record to feature lead guitarist Travis Neumann and last to feature Max on bass before switching to lead guitar.

Background

This is the first music of the bands to feature their "beach pop" and "power pop" sound. Lead Guitarist Travis Neumann left after the recording of the EP but was featured in the music video for "Aliens Landing". The album was once again produced by Joey Armstrong's father, Billie Joe Armstrong. The album is mixed by Chris Dugan and mastered by Chris Mathers and Matthew Voelker. The band toured in summer 2014 with Rise Against in support of the EP.

Fin

A fin is a thin component or appendage attached to a larger body or structure. Fins typically function as foils that produce lift or thrust, or provide the ability to steer or stabilize motion while traveling in water, air, or other fluid media. Fins are also used to increase surface areas for heat transfer purposes, or simply as ornamentation.

Fins first evolved on fish as a means of locomotion. Fish fins are used to generate thrust and control the subsequent motion. Fish, and other aquatic animals such as cetaceans, actively propel and steer themselves with pectoral and tail fins. As they swim, they use other fins, such as dorsal and anal fins to achieve stability and refine their maneuvering.

Generating thrust

Foil shaped fins generate thrust when moved, the lift of the fin sets water or air in motion and pushes the fin in the opposite direction. Aquatic animals get significant thrust by moving fins back and forth in water. Often the tail fin is used, but some aquatic animals generate thrust from pectoral fins. Fins can also generate thrust if they are rotated in air or water. Turbines and propellers (and sometimes fans and pumps) use a number of rotating fins, also called foils, wings, arms or blades. Propellers use the fins to translate torquing force to lateral thrust, thus propelling an aircraft or ship. Turbines work in reverse, using the lift of the blades to generate torque and power from moving gases or water.

Fins (song)

"Fins" is a song performed by American popular music singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett. It was written by Buffett, Coral Reefer Band members Deborah McColl and Barry Chance, and author Tom Corcoran. It was released as a single (b/w "Dreamsicle") on MCA 41109 in July 1979.

It was first released on his 1979 album Volcano. It reached #35 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #25 on the Cash Box Top 100, and #42 on the Easy Listening chart.

The title refers to the fins of metaphorical sharks, i.e. "land sharks," men who attempt to pick up the woman who is the subject of the song. She is said to feel like a remora due to the proximity of the predators.

"Fins" is one of Buffett's more popular songs with fans, and is part of "The Big 8" that he has played at almost all of his concerts. Recorded live versions of the song appear on Feeding Frenzy, Buffett Live: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and the video Live by the Bay. Buffett usually begins the song with a few bars of the "Main Title" theme from the movie Jaws. Concertgoers typically respond to the chorus line of "fins to the left, fins to the right" by extending their arms above their heads in a fin shape and moving them from left to right. Fin and shark themes have become a prominent part of parrothead (Buffett fan) clothing and gear and feature in several of Buffett's commercial ventures such as Land Shark Lager beer.

FINS

FINS, Factory Interface Network Service, is a network protocol used by Omron PLCs, over different physical networks like Ethernet, Controller Link, DeviceNet and RS-232C.

The FINS communications service was developed by Omron to provide a consistent way for PLCs and computers on various networks to communicate. Compatible network types include Ethernet, Host Link, Controller Link, SYSMAC LINK, SYSMAC WAY, and Toolbus. FINS allows communications between nodes up to three network levels. A direct connection between a computer and a PLC via Host Link is not considered a network level.
