Swarf, also known as chips or by other process-specific names (such as turnings, filings, or shavings), is pieces of metal, wood, or plastic that are the debris or waste resulting from machining, woodworking, or similar subtractive (material-removing) manufacturing processes. Swarf or chips can be small particles (such as the gritty swarf from grinding metal or the sawdust from sawing or sanding wood); long, stringy tendrils (such as the springy chips from turning tough metals, or long shavings from whittling); slag-like waste (such as is produced within pipe during pipefitting work); or stone fragments and dust (as in masonry).
Some of these terms are mass nouns (such as swarf and sawdust) and some of them are count nouns (such as chips, filings, or shavings).
The rest of this article discusses metalworking swarf. Wood swarf is discussed at sawdust.
Chips can be extremely sharp, and this creates a safety problem, as they can cause serious injuries if not handled correctly. Depending on the composition of the material, it can persist in the environment for a long time before degrading. This, combined with the small size of some chips (e.g. those of brass or bronze), allows them to disperse widely by piggy-backing on soft materials and also to penetrate the skin as deep splinters.

Swarf were an electronic band from Brighton, Sussex.
The lineup was Liz Green (vocals and lyrics), Andrew Stock (synths, programming) and Chris Kiefer (synths, programming). The band was formed in 2001 by Green and Stock, with Kiefer joining later.
After a 2004 UK tour with Ultravox veteran John Foxx the band released Art, Science, Exploitation, Swarf's first and only full album to date. Several tracks were produced by Marc Heal of Cubanate.
The band's original following stemmed from the Goth and Industrial genres, but the band themselves never followed the scene's usual clichés. More recently the group have moved away from their original audience and seem to have found a niche in the dance scene, featuring on several Trance compilation albums. BBC South have also broadcast a live session. Even Jordan has recently taken to Swarf.
The band also released songs via torrent.
SILENCE ROOM
I’m sitting right in your house
I’m sitting on your settee
I had to make my own coffee and find the remote for your tv
I came all this way
But you’re a million miles away
I’m still waiting till you get off the phone, like I got all day
You better wait a sec
Cos I can’t connect
You gotta let me in your head
Chorus
You know it, you see it
You can’t get out of it
I show it, you conceal it
But I’m still shut out of it
And I get so upset
It’s got to happen soon
Gotta get out of the silence room
I’m sitting with all your friends
We’re laughing at all your ways
I pretend I see the funny side but really I’m ready to break
They say talk is cheap
But with you it wouldn’t be
If you could just take the time to speak your mind
How much effort would that take
You better make a start
At trying to act the part
Or I’m getting on the next plane
Chorus
You know it, you see it
You can’t get out of it
I show it, you conceal it
But I’m still shut out of it
And I get so upset
It’s got to happen soon
Gotta get out of the silence room
You’re keeping a secret, you know it’s a lie
You’re walking on thin glass you know that this can’t last
You’re keeping a secret, you know it’s a lie
You gotta let me in your head
Chorus
You know it, you see it
You can’t get out of it
I show it, you conceal it
But I’m still shut out of it
And I get so upset
It’s got to happen soon
Gotta get out of the silence room
You know it, you see it
You can’t get out of it
I show it, you conceal it
But I’m still shut out of it
And I get so upset
It’s got to happen soon
