Swami
A swami (Sanskrit: स्वामी svāmī [sʋaːmiː]) sometimes abbreviated “sw.” is an ascetic or yogi who has been initiated into the religious monastic order founded by some religious teacher. It is believed to be originally used for the ones who were initiated into to the Advaita Vedanta movement started by Adi Shankara. The usage of this word is not just for a yogi but also used for a religious guru, with or without disciples.
The Oxford English Dictionary gives the etymology as
In the Bengali language, the word (pronounced [ˈʃami]), while carrying its original meaning, has a dual meaning of “husband”. The word also means “husband” in the Malay language, where it is spelled “Suami”. Swami also means husband in the Khmer language.

Swami (band)
Swami are a British Indian bhangra/Asian Underground band from Birmingham, England. "Swami" is also the pseudonym of the band's leader Diamond Duggal (aka DJ Swami), who founded the band with his brother Simon Duggal. The band has made it clear through interviews that Swami is a band in the traditional sense, and not a looser collective.
History
Swami's debut dance album Desi Nu Skool Beatz was initially released on Simon & Diamond Duggal's own Sub Dub label in 1998. After Sub Dub folded the album was picked up by Nation Records. Described as "blinding" by the Birmingham Post, the album received some international recognition when the opening track Mehbooba appeared in the 2004 Olsen twins movie New York Minute.Nu Skool Beatz was followed by the 2002 album Bhangradotcom, which was less dance-oriented.
2004-2006: DesiRock
The band's big break came with the release of their third album DesiRock, which became popular in the British Asian music scene. By this time Diamond was the only original member remaining and had recruited his cousin S-Endz as rap vocalist in the band alongside British bhangra singer Jagz and MC Sarpanch.
Swami (1977 film)
Swami is a 1977 Hindi film directed by Basu Chatterjee and produced by Jaya Chakravarty (mother of Hema Malini).
The film stars Shabana Azmi, Vikram, Girish Karnad, Utpal Dutt. Hema Malini and Dharmendra make a guest appearance together in the film. The film's music is by Rajesh Roshan.
Plot
'Saudamini' (Shabana Azmi) is a bright village girl with academic ambitions and an appetite for literature and philosophy. Her intellectual uncle (Utpal Dutt) indulges her brainy bent, encouraging her studies and running interference between Mini and her mother (Sudha Shivpuri), a pious widow whose only concern is to see Mini married, and quickly. Mini has a nascent love affair with her neighbor Narendra (Vikram), the zamindar's son, a student in Calcutta who on his frequent visits brings her Victorian literature, listens raptly to her discourse, and is bold enough to kiss her opportunistically when they are caught together in a rainstorm. Circumstances conspire against Mini and Narendra, though, and soon Mini finds herself married against her wishes to a wheat trader 'Ghanshyam' (Girish Karnad) from a neighboring village. Plunged into despair, Mini struggles to become accustomed to life in her unwanted marriage and her new home, where Ganshyam's stepmother seems to favor Mini's sisters-in-law and where her new husband treats her with a patience that she finds perplexing.
