Supermax (short for: super-maximum security) is the name used to describe "control-unit" prisons, or units within prisons, which represent the most secure levels of custody in the prison systems of certain countries. The objective is to provide long-term, segregated housing for inmates classified as the highest security risks in the prison system—the "worst of the worst" criminals—and those who pose a threat to national and international security.
According to the National Institute of Corrections, an agency of the United States government, "A supermax is a stand-alone unit or part of another facility and is designated for violent or disruptive inmates. It typically involves up to 23-hour-per-day, single-cell confinement for an indefinite period of time. Inmates in supermax housing have minimal contact with staff and other inmates," a definition confirmed by a majority of prison wardens.
Leena Kurki and Norval Morris have argued there is no absolute definition of a supermax, and that different jurisdictions classify prisons as supermax inconsistently. They identify four general features that tend to characterize supermax prisons:
Desert Stars is a fictional superhero team in the Marvel Comics universe. The group of heroes are the official Arizona Fifty State Initiative team and were created by Christos Gage and Stefano Caselli.
As the team worked to help civilians during the Secret Invasion, 3-D Man and the Skrull Kill Krew attack. They reveal Desert Stars' member the Blacksmith to be a Skrull, and after a fierce battle they kill him. Most of the Desert Stars team is incapacitated during the fight, but Komodo leaves to help 3-D Man and the Skrull Kill Krew find the Skrulls who have infiltrated the other Initiative teams. The team later reappears helping the Heavy Hitters to protect a dam attacked by the superpowered villain Zzzax. When Norman Osborn takes over the Initiative, he has to deal with Prodigy leading the Heavy Hitters in separating from the Initiative. He gathers together a strike force to arrest the team, but chooses not to use the Desert Stars since they're friends with the Heavy Hitters. Komodo is later depowered and kicked out of the Initiative for arguing with new Initiative leader Taskmaster for covering up Hardball's crimes.
Supermax was a project of Austrian musician and producer, Kurt Hauenstein (1949–2011), best known for "Lovemachine", a 1977 German #4 single, that peaked at #6 in Switzerland, #9 in Austria and #96 in US.
The members of the band were Kurt Hauenstein, Hans Ochs (guitar), Ken Taylor (bass guitar), Lothar Krell (keyboards), Peter Koch (drums) and the singers Cee Cee Cobb and Jean Graham. Later, Bernadet Onore Eben and Jessica Hauenstein, the daughter of Kurt Hauenstein, joined the group as backing vocal singers. In 1981, Supermax toured as the first mixed-race band through South Africa. Despite warnings and death threats, Supermax finished the tour, but this made some countries refuse permits for entry, and consequently the group was black-listed by some political organizations.
