Supercooling

Supercooling, also known as undercooling, is the process of lowering the temperature of a liquid or a gas below its freezing point without it becoming a solid.

Explanation

A liquid crossing its standard freezing point will crystalize in the presence of a seed crystal or nucleus around which a crystal structure can form creating a solid. Lacking any such nuclei, the liquid phase can be maintained all the way down to the temperature at which crystal homogeneous nucleation occurs. Homogeneous nucleation can occur above the glass transition temperature, but if homogeneous nucleation has not occurred above that temperature an amorphous (non-crystalline) solid will form.

Water normally freezes at 273.15 K (0 °C or 32 °F) but it can be "supercooled" at standard pressure down to its crystal homogeneous nucleation at almost 224.8 K (−48.3 °C/−55 °F). The process of supercooling requires that water be pure and free of nucleation sites, which can be achieved by processes like reverse osmosis, but the cooling itself does not require any specialised technique. If water is cooled at a rate on the order of 106 K/s, the crystal nucleation can be avoided and water becomes a glass. Its glass transition temperature is much colder and harder to determine, but studies estimate it at about 136 K (−137 °C/-215 °F).Glassy water can be heated up to approximately 150 K (−123 °C/−189.4 °F) without nucleation occurring. In the range of temperatures between 231 K (−42 °C/−43.6 °F) and 150 K (−123 °C/−189.4 °F) experiments find only crystal ice.

Upright Citizens Brigade

The Upright Citizens Brigade is an improvisational and sketch comedy group that emerged from Chicago's ImprovOlympic in 1990. The original incarnation of the group consisted of Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh, Adam McKay, Rick Roman, Horatio Sanz and Drew Franklin, whose picture is the UCB logo. Other early members included Neil Flynn, Armando Diaz, and Rich Fulcher.

In 2013, Besser, Roberts and Walsh wrote The Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual.

History

The Upright Citizens Brigade began performing improv and sketch comedy at Kill the Poet in Chicago. Their first show was called Virtual Reality. The group followed with shows entitled UCBTV, Conference on the Future of Happiness, Thunderball, Bucket of Truth, Big Dirty Hands, The Real Real World, and Punch Your Friend in the Face.

In 1993, the Upright Citizens Brigade (Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Adam McKay, Rick Roman, and Horatio Sanz) were regular guests on stage at the New Variety produced and hosted by Richard O'Donnell at the Chicago Improv comedy club, 504 N. Wells.

Supercool (band)

Supercool were a band featuring singer Lantz L'Amour, guitarist Stacey Blades of the version of L.A. Guns featuring singer Phil Lewis, former Faster Pussycat and Liberators bassist Eric Stacy, and at different times drummers Vik Foxx (Enuff Z'nuff, Vince Neil Band, Warrant) and Dave Moreno (Liberators). The band released an EP titled Live At The Wilcox Hotel.

Lantz L'Amour and Stacey Blades also played together in the band Smack.

Eric Stacy and Dave Moreno also played together in the band Liberators.

    Supercool

Tell me I'm your everything, all that you could need,
A saviour and a hero, lie to me at least,
Tell me I need challenges, a life full to the brim,
And a chorus line of motivators kicking my head in
I could do with a break, a holiday, a stretch of yellow sun,
I need to feel the ocean - it keeps me safe from harm
And I'd love to really feel the earth beneath my feet,
To feel that I am being swept along with it.
Give me all your troubles, I can take the strain,
I'm another Samson, I can feel no pain,
Watch me from a distance, see me buckle and break,
Knowing it would happen, knowing your escape
But I'm bang up to date, the modern man, an icon for my times,
I've nothing to declare except this fallacy of mine
And it may be too late to save myself, to stop the awful rot,
To kill the killer instinct, and suffocate the lot
Give me everything, give me everything you've got...
Can't get through, mouth open and mind closed
I still have tomorrow, I can wait that long,
I don't have to say another word,
I'll run out of breath before long...
I have heard the angels speak, crawling on all fours,
I don't listen to myself, I can't hear me anymore,
I have seen the darkened skies crashing to the floor,
