Sunset Island, previously known as Hogback Island (named after the shallow slate reef south of it) is located just west of the Greater Mallets Bay, Colchester, Vermont, USA. It is a private island with Patricia McDonald as the majority owner.
When the island was called Hogback, it was used by the caretaker of the Colchester reef lighthouse for farming. When the Lighthouse was shipped to the Shelburne Museum in 1956, Sunset Island went up for auction and was purchased by John McDonald and friends to be used predominately for duck hunting. However within the previous twenty years it has been used recreationally by friends and family as a location of celebration, vacation, and relaxation.
Although there is no electricity or plumbing on the island, there is a brown cabin with bunk beds and a loft for comfortable sleeping, an out house, and beautiful beaches with perfect skipping stones to distract the mind from the business of the city life.
