Sumitra

Sumitra (Sanskrit: सुमित्रा, Tamil: சுமித்திரை (ⁱ/ˈ/), Burmese: Thumitra, Malay: Samutra, Khmer: សមុទ្រ, Thai: สมุทรเทวี Samutthra Thewi) in the Indian epic Ramayana, was the third of King Dasharatha's three wives and a queen of Ayodhya. She was the mother of twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna. She came from the ancient kingdom of Kashi. She was third wife of King Dasharatha. She was the wisest of the wives of Dasaratha. She was the one to first realize that Rama was the incarnation of Lord Narayana. She even encouraged Lakshmana to accompany Rama and serve him during his exile. Sumitra often helped Dashratha with his problems.

There is a popular story about why twins were born to Sumitra. Dasaratha, despite having three wives had no children exept a daughter Shanta from queen Kaushalya and from none of the queens he had been able to give an heir to the Ikshvaku dynasty. The thought of his dynasty ending with him saddened Dasaratha and he was very eager to have a son who would take care of the throne of Ayodhya.

Sumithra (actress)

Sumithra is an Indian actress. She has appeared in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada languages. She is best known for her roles as mother after the 90s.

Early life

Sumithra was born to Ragavan Nair and Janaki at Thrissur, Kerala. She has three brothers, her father was working in an oil refining company. When she was doing her schooling she learnt dance from Murugappan Master, who was the guide to K.R Vijaya on that time. Sumithra is good classical dancer.

Sumithra started her career at her 19 years in the movie Nrithasala in 1974, Director A.P Raj is the first director who noticed sumithra's talent.

Sumithra acted as heroine with Rajini and Kamal as well as she acted as mother to both of them.

Sumithra made her debut in Nirmalayam. She has acted in over 200 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada languages. In Tamil, Avalum Penn Thaane (1974) was her first movie. Later in 1975 she made her debut Kannada movie Mugiyada Kathe which had a popular song "Kangalu Vandane Helide". She has acted with leading heroes like Vishnuvardhan, Rajesh in Kannada, Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, Sivakumar, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in Tamil. She's performed supporting roles in hundreds of Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam,and Telugu movies.
