Sully (band)

Sully was a Canadian indie rock group formed in 1994 in Ottawa. The band released a self-titled album independently in 1995. After releasing "I Have Much to Report" through Toronto independent label Random Sound in 1997, Sully signed to Nettwerk Records. "I Have Much to Report" was re-released by Nettwerk in 1998. Sully was showcased on Nettwerk Record's Plastic Compilation (Vol. 1) which also included artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Chemical Brothers, and Propellorheads. Sully was featured in numerous North American publications (Alternative Press, Rolling Stone, Option, Chicago Tribune, Ottawa Xpress, NOW Magazine, and many more) with favorable reviews. Sully played shows across the U.S. and Canada, and "I Have Much to Report" remained in the top 5 position on the College Charts for several weeks.

Sully was eventually dropped by Nettwerk Records and went on to release its third album "Bright Lights" independently in 2001.

Sully's music found placement in a variety of films such as Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down (CBC film, 1998), Ecstasy (film, 1996), Bliss (TV, 2002), Get A Life (TVO, 1999), Drop in (MTV-Canada, fall 2002), and a commercial for Cinematheque (a division of the Toronto International Film Festival,1996). The song Fidget went to No. 1 on the Pop chart on Garageband.com. Sully shot a video for "Half of Once" from "Bright Lights" with a MuchMusic VideoFact grant. Sully was chosen by a panel of industry judges to perform on a broadcast special for CBC (National TV in Canada) called "The Great Canadian Music Dream" in January 2003.

Sully is an upcoming American-Australian-British biographical drama film directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Todd Komarnicki, based on the autobiography Highest Duty by Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger with Jeffrey Zaslow. The film stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Holt McCallany, Jamey Sheridan, and Jerry Ferrara. The film will be released by Warner Bros. on September 9, 2016.

!!! is a dance-punk band that formed in Sacramento, California, in 1996 by lead singer Nic Offer. Its name is most commonly pronounced "Chk Chk Chk" ([/tʃk.tʃk.tʃk/]). Members of !!! came from other local bands such as The Yah Mos, Black Liquorice and Popesmashers. They are currently based in New York City, Sacramento, and Portland, Oregon. The band's sixth full-length album, As If, was released in October 2015.

Background and history

!!! is an American band formed in the summer of 1995 by the merger of part of the group Black Liquorice and Popesmashers. After a successful joint tour, these two teams decided to mix the disco-funk with more aggressive sounds and integrate the hardcore singer Nic Offer from the The Yah Mos. The band's name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the clicking sounds of the Bushmens' Khoisan language were represented as "!". However, as the bandmembers themselves say, !!! is pronounced by repeating thrice any monosyllabic sound. "Chk Chk Chk" is the most common pronunciation, which the URL of their official website and the title of their Myspace page suggest is the preferred pronunciation.

Band society

A band society is the simplest form of human society. A band generally consists of a small kin group, no larger than an extended family or clan; one definition sees a band as consisting of no more than 100 individuals.

Characteristics

Bands have a loose organization. Their power structure is often egalitarian and has informal leadership; the older members of the band generally are looked to for guidance and advice, and decisions are often made on a consensus basis, but there are no written laws and none of the specialised coercive roles (e.g., police) typically seen in more complex societies. Bands' customs are almost always transmitted orally. Formal social institutions are few or non-existent. Religion is generally based on family tradition, individual experience, or counsel from a shaman. All known band societies hunt and gather to obtain their subsistence.

Definitions and distinctions

In his 1972 study, The Notion of the Tribe, Morton Fried defined bands as small, mobile, and fluid social formations with weak leadership that do not generate surpluses, pay taxes nor support a standing army.
