Sukumar Ray

Sukumar Ray (Bengali: সুকুমার রায়;  Sukumār Rāẏ ) (30 October 1887 – 10 September 1923) was a Bengali humorous poet, story writer and playwright who mainly wrote for children. His works such as the collection of poems "Aboltabol" (Bengali: আবোলতাবোল)("Gibberish"), novella "HaJaBaRaLa" (Bengali: হযবরল), short story collection "Pagla Dashu" (Bengali: পাগলা দাশু; "Crazy Dashu") and play "Chalachittachanchari" (Bengali: চলচিত্তচঞ্চরী) are considered equal in stature to Alice in Wonderland. More than 80 years after his death, Ray remains one of the most popular of children's writers in both West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Sukumar Ray was the son of children's story writer Upendrakishore Ray (Ray Chowdhury), the father of Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray and grandfather of Bengali filmmaker Sandip Ray. Sukumar Ray was also known as the convenor of "Monday Club" (Bengali: মণ্ডা ক্লাব), a weekly gathering of like-minded people at the Ray residence, where the members were free to express their opinions about the world at large. A number of poems were penned by Sukumar Ray in relation to the matters concerning "Monday Club", primarily soliciting attendance, announcing important meetings etc.

Sukumar Ray is a 1987 Bengali short documentary film made by Satyajit Ray on his father, Sukumar Ray. It was released during the birth centenary year of Sukumar Ray, who was born on 30 October 1887. The thirty minutes documentary features the life and some of the works by Sukumar Ray in the form of paintings, photographs and readings. This is the last documentary made by Satyajit Ray as a tribute to his father, before he died in 1992. The documentary used Sukumar Ray's photographs and paintings than video recording as the film was considerably a new medium in India when Sukumar Ray died in 1923.

Sukumar Ray was a Bengali humorous poet, story writer and playwright who mainly wrote for children. Born in Bengali family on 30 October 1887 to Bidhumukhi and Upendrakishore Ray, Ray is a second children of six and illustrator of literary nonsense and nonsense rhyme in Bengali literature. Graduated with Honours degree in Physics and Chemistry from the Presidency College, Kolkata, Ray got training in photography and printing technology in England at the School of Photo-Engraving and Lithography, London. He formed the "Nonsense Club" and the "Monday Club", the members of which included some of the young artists, writers, scholars and critics of that time. Ray was also associated with Brahmo Samaj and wrote a poem called "Atiter Katha" for young readers. His works such as the collection of poems Abol Tabol (Gibberish), novella HaJaBaRaLa (The Absurdity), short story collection Pagla Dashu (Crazy Dashu) and play Chalachitta Chanchari are considered nonsense masterpieces. Father of film-maker Satyajit Ray, Sukumar Ray died of severe infectious fever, Leishmaniasis on 10 September 1923.

Sukumar (director)

Sukumar (born Sukumar Bandreddi), is an Indian film director and screenwriter known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema. He made his directorial debut with the blockbuster romantic comedy, Arya. In 2014, he directed the Psychological thriller, 1: Nenokkadine which had one of the best openings ever for an Indian film, in the United States, and reached $1 million mark in its first weekend.

Background

Sukumar was born in East Godavari District. He did his schooling from ZPH high school, Razole and graduated from Government College, Razole. Sukumar worked as a mathematics lecturer at Aditya Educational Institutions (Junior College) in Kakinada. Before venturing into film direction, He had earlier worked as a script associate and assistant director for Telugu films Manasichi Choodu, Kshemanga Velli Labhanga Randi, Hanuman Junction and Dil. He then directed his first film Arya in 2004, which is a trend setter in Telugu film industry which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu.

Sukumaran Potti, commonly known as Sukumar, is a popular satirist and cartoonist from Kerala state in southern India.

He completed his education from University College, Thiruvananthapuram and joined the Kerala Police Department. He started his literary life as a cartoonist in Kerala Kaumudi and later became a full-fledged writer and satirist. Along with Veloor Krishnankutty, Sukumar was one of the most popular humour writers of his time. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1996 for the work Vayil Vannathu Kothakku Pattu.
