Style (literature)

In literature, style refers to the codified gestures in which the author tells the story. Style is considered one of the fundamental components of fiction, along with plot, character, theme, and setting. Style in fiction includes the use of various literary techniques.

Components

Fiction is a form of narrative, one of the four rhetorical modes of discourse. Fiction-writing also has distinct forms of expression, or modes, each with its own purposes and conventions. Agent and author Evan Marshall identifies five fiction-writing modes: action, summary, dialogue, feelings/thoughts, and background (Marshall 1998, pp. 143–165). Author and writing-instructor Jessica Page Morrell lists six delivery modes for fiction-writing: action, exposition, description, dialogue, summary, and transition (Morrell 2006, p. 127). Author Peter Selgin refers to methods, including action, dialogue, thoughts, summary, scene, and description (Selgin 2007, p. 38). Currently, there is no consensus in the writing community on the number and composition of fiction-writing modes and their uses.

Style (Orbital song)

"Style" is a 1999 single by the electronica duo Orbital. It was their fourth consecutive single, and fifth overall, to reach the top 20 of the UK singles chart, peaking at number 13.

The track takes its name from the analogue electronic musical instrument, the stylophone, which is used extensively on the track. The main version includes a sample of "Oh L'amour" performed by Dollar, while the "Bigpipe Style" version (which features the main riff played on bagpipes) samples Suzi Quatro's hit "Devil Gate Drive". Orbital's request to use a sample from a Rolf Harris stylophone demonstration disc was turned down. The other versions are "Old Style", a more club-oriented dance mix; and "New Style", a retro-styled version with live bass by Andy James.

All of the mixes are by Orbital themselves; the duo had wanted Stereolab to remix the track, but the latter group were on tour at the time and unavailable, so the "New Style" mix is Orbital's own version of a Stereolab-type mix.

Style (2006 film)

Style is a Telugu film produced by Lagadapati Sirisha Sridhar on Larsco Entertainment banner, directed by Raghava Lawrence. Starring Prabhu Deva, Raghava Lawrence, Raja, Kamalinee Mukherjee, Charmme Kaur in lead roles, Chiranjeevi & Nagarjuna Akkineni given cameo appearance and music is composed by Mani Sharma. This is Lawrence's second directorial venture after the blockbuster Mass with Nagarjuna Akkineni. Megastar Chiranjeevi also made a came appearance in this film. Plot

Ganesh (Prabhu Deva) is a good dancer. He beats Anthony in one dance competition to head into the international arena. Anthony gets Ganesh beaten up, and Ganesh loses his legs in a car accident. He is depressed, but he wants to give his dance talent to someone and make him his heir. On a different line, Raghava (Raghava Lawrence) works as a boy at a dance school in Vizag. He and four of his friends are good dancers, but they are never recognized until one folk dance at a hotel. Ganesh finds his prospective heir in Raghava. The rest of the film is how Raghava prepares and defeats Anthony in the final dance competition.

Fiction (The Comsat Angels album)

Fiction, released in 1982 on Polydor Records, was The Comsat Angels' third album. The album was reissued on CD twice, in 1995 by RPM Records and in 2006 by Renascent Records, with different track listings (see below). The album peaked at No. 94 in the UK charts in September 1982.

Fiction was less gloomy than the Comsats' previous album, Sleep No More. Frontman Stephen Fellows said of the change: "I certainly didn't want to make another record as intense as Sleep No More — at least not immediately. Sleep No More was so dark that I felt it skewed things a bit — possibly even mentally for me. I just felt if we carried on in that direction it'd lead to madness or maybe even something worse."

Fellows was satisfied with many of the songs on Fiction, including "What Else!?," "Pictures," and "After the Rain", but felt that the album as a whole could have been better. "We were a bit short of tunes when we recorded it," he said. "We were touring quite a bit after Sleep No More and there wasn't as much time to write as I would have liked."

Fiction (magazine)

Fiction is a literary magazine founded in 1972 by Mark Jay Mirsky, Donald Barthelme, and Max Frisch. It is published by the City College of New York. This is not the same as the French science fiction magazine Fiction, published from 1953-1990.

In its early years, Fiction was published in tabloid format and featured experimental work by such writers as John Barth, Jerome Charyn, Italo Calvino, Ronald Sukenick, Steve Katz, Russell Banks, Samuel Beckett, and J.G. Ballard. It later took the form of a more traditional paperback literary magazine, publishing short works by Reinaldo Arenas, Isaac Babel, Donald Barthelme, Mei Chin, Julio Cortázar, Marguerite Duras, Natalia Ginzburg, Clarice Lispector, Robie Macauley, Robert Musil, Joyce Carol Oates, Manuel Puig, and John Yau..

Though the magazine ostensibly focuses on publishing fiction, as its name implies, it has recently also featured excerpts from Robert Musil's diaries and letters, as well as various writings with an autobiographical slant.

Fiction (Yoga Lin album)

Fiction, often stylized as fiction (Chinese: 大/小說家) is Taiwanese Mandopop artist Yoga Lin's fourth Mandarin studio album. It was released on 22 June 2012 by HIM International Music. It was ranked no. 1 in Taipei Times's list of top five Mandarin albums of 2012. Yoga Lin co-produced most songs on the album, and participated in the writing of the lyrics and mixing of the songs.

Background

The concept of the album was to use music to tell a story, and each song on the album functions as a short story. The whole album becomes a ten song collection of short stories in a multitude of genres as science fiction, romance, horror, allegory, and so on. Songs like "说谎 (Fairytale)", "心酸 (Heartbreak)" and "早开的晚霞 (Early Sunset Clouds)" from earlier albums made him famous, which all conveys Yoga Lin's characteristic melancholic sound. Yoga Lin and his producers agreed that for the fourth album they wanted to try something different to record a more powerful performance, as well as showcase his talents in various styles of music.
