Stuart Young

Stuart Young (born December 16, 1972, in Hull, Yorkshire) is an English footballer.

Career

Young’s senior football career began at Arsenal FC in 1990, before moving to his home town of Hull City in 1991. He spent two seasons at the Tigers, before spells at Northampton Town in 1993, Scarborough FC 1994,Scunthorpe United between 1994 to 1996, before joining Blyth Spartans. Young then headed overseas to Singapore where he had three successful seasons. He joined S League side Woodlands Wellington from 1996 to 1997. In his last season in Singapore, he finished as the league's top goal scorer with Home United FC.

In 1999, he rejoined Woodlands Wellington before joining Australian team Wollongong Wolves in the old NSL the same year. The move proved to be a successful one for the striker and he enjoyed five special years in NSW, captaining the side from 2002–04 and winning two NSL Championships along the way. He is the Wollongong Wolves' highest ever goal scorer with 60 goals.

His move to the Perth Glory for the inaugural A-league season endured some early hiccups due to the club's then manager Steve McMahon's reluctance to play the veteran striker. It was suggested that McMahon's apathy towards him resulted from the fact that Young was not one of his signings. During the couple of occasions in which he was used by McMahon, he was substituted on late during the game and this was also indicative of McMahon's belief that his usefulness to the team was limited.

Stuart Young (cricketer)

Stuart Harrison Young (born 6 July 1938) is a former English cricketer. Young was a left-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. He was born at Blackhall, County Durham.

Young made his debut for Durham against the Lancashire Second XI in the 1956 Minor Counties Championship. He played minor counties cricket for Durham from 1956 to 1972, making 108 Minor Counties Championship appearances. He made his List A debut against Hertfordshire in the 1964 Gillette Cup. He made four further List A appearances, the last of which came against Oxfordshire in the 1972 Gillette Cup. In his five List A matches, he scored 38 runs at an average of 12.66, with a high score of 22. With the ball, he took 12 wickets at a bowling average of 9.66, with best figures of 4/13.

He also played first-class cricket for the Minor Counties. His first-class debut came against the touring Indians in 1959. He made two further first-class appearances for the team, against the touring South Africans in 1960, and the touring West Indians in 1969. In his three first-class matches, he scored 16 runs at an average of 8.00, with a high score of 14. With the ball, he took 12 wickets at an average of 24.08, with best figures of 4/44.

Stuart Young (1934–1986)

Stuart Young (1934–1986) was an English business executive and accountant.

Young was the brother of a former UK cabinet minister David Young, Baron Young of Graffham. He succeeded George Howard as the chairman of the BBC board of governors in 1983 and remained in this role until his early death from cancer in 1986. When he first became a BBC governor in 1981 he argued that the BBC should be funded by advertising. However, he later changed his mind and argued for the continuation of the television licence during the Peacock Committee. This disappointed Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who disliked the television licence and had originally appointed Young believing that, as a Conservative, he would challenge the more left-leaning Director-General of the BBC, Alasdair Milne. She believed that Young had “gone native” and was now supporting the BBC instead of the government.

At the time of his death, Young had with his wife Shirley, two daughters - Lesley and Lynda - a son-in-law, Denis, and one-year-old granddaughter, Sophie.
