Clockwork

Clockwork refers to the inner workings of either a mechanical clock (where it is also called a movement) or another device that operates in a similar fashion (such as a dial indicator). Specifically, the term refers to mechanisms utilizing a complex series of gears.

A clockwork motor is a clockwork device mechanically powered by a mainspring, a spiral torsion spring of metal ribbon. Energy is stored in the mainspring manually by winding it up, turning a key attached to a ratchet which twists the mainspring tighter. Then the force of the mainspring turns the clockwork's gears, until the stored energy is used up. The adjective wind-up refers to mainspring-powered clockwork devices, which include clocks and watches, kitchen timers, music boxes, and wind-up toys.

History

One of the earliest known examples of a clockwork mechanism is the Antikythera mechanism, a first-century BC geared analogue computer, somewhat astrolabe-like, for calculating astronomical positions and eclipses, recovered from a Greek shipwreck. There are many other accounts of clockwork devices in ancient Greece, even in its mythology, and the mechanism itself is sophisticated enough to indicate a significant history of lesser devices leading up to its creation.

Clockwork (Easton Corbin song)

"Clockwork" is a song recorded by American country music artist Easton Corbin. It was released in January 2014 as the lead single from Corbin's third studio album, About to Get Real. The song was written by Carson Chamberlain, Ashley Gorley and Wade Kirby.

I’m excited especially to release a song like ‘Clockwork...’‘Clockwork’ is a good reflection of my country roots and it shows that I’m growing as an artist. I think when my fans hear this song they will get a good taste of how my upcoming album is going to be.”

Critical reception

Matt Bjorke of Roughstock rated Clockwork 3.5 stars. He states, "as far as lead singles from upcoming albums go, “Clockwork” is the kind of song which SHOULD do well at radio. It has the contemporary melody —there’s even audible steel guitar fills — and a solid vocal from Easton Corbin."

Strobe light

A strobe light or stroboscopic lamp, commonly called a strobe, is a device used to produce regular flashes of light. It is one of a number of devices that can be used as a stroboscope. The word originated from the Greek strobos, meaning "act of whirling."

A typical commercial strobe light has a flash energy in the region of 10 to 150 joules, and discharge times as short as a few milliseconds, often resulting in a flash power of several kilowatts. Larger strobe lights can be used in “continuous” mode, producing extremely intense illumination.

The light source is commonly a xenon flash lamp, or flashtube, which has a complex spectrum and a color temperature of approximately 5,600 kelvins. To obtain colored light, colored gels may be used.

Scientific explanation of flashtubes

Strobe lights usually use flashtubes with energy supplied from a capacitor, an energy storage device much like a battery, but capable of charging and releasing energy much faster. Recently, some strobe lights have been found to use rectified mains electricity and no capacitors at all. In a capacitor-based strobe light, the capacitor is charged up to around 300V. Once the capacitor has been charged, a small amount of power is diverted into a trigger transformer, a small transformer with a high turns ratio, which generates a weak, but high voltage spike required to ionize the xenon gas in a flash tube. An arc is created inside the tube, which acts as a bridge for the much bigger pulse to flow down later. Arcs present almost a direct short circuit, allowing the capacitors to quickly release their energy into the arc. This rapidly heats the xenon gas, creating an extremely bright plasma discharge, which is seen as a flash.

Strobelight (Kimberley Locke song)

"Strobelight" is a single from recording artist Kimberley Locke, her first with Randy Jackson's newly formed dance music label, Dream Merchant 21. This single is also her first release of original material since 2007's Change.

Following the success Kimberley had on the dance charts with remixes of her prior singles, she was excited to release her first dance song in its original state. "It's exciting for me to come out of the gate with a dance song. '8th World Wonder' 'Band of Gold' were both remixed as dance songs but 'Strobelight' is straight out of the gate as a dance song.". Unlike her other singles, this is her first to not be in support of a full album. "I signed a singles only deal with Randy Jackson so there will be no album. We live in a world where people go to itunes and download the songs they want."
