Strand swamp

A strand swamp or strand is a type of swamp in Florida that forms a linear drainage channel on flatlands. A forested wetland ecological habitat, strands occur on land areas with high water tables where the lack of slope prevents stream formation. Strands are more linear than the cypress dome swamps that form in more rounded depressions and are fairly similar to floodplain swamps that form further north along streams and rivers.

For the most part, strand swamps occur south of Lake Okeechobee. Notable strand swamps include the Fakahatchee Strand and Corkscrew Swamp, where the trees are up to 700 years old and 100 feet (30 m) tall. The Fakahatchee Strand is a tree-filled channel of slowly moving water that is 20 miles (32 km) long and 5 miles (8 km) wide.

Strand swamps are often dominated by bald cypress (Taxodium distichum). Shallower strand swamps may contain pond cypress (Taxodium ascendens). When either of these trees dominate, the strand is known as a "cypress strand". Outside of protected areas, most old-growth cypress trees in Florida along streams or lakes have been harvested for their rot-resistant wood.

Swamp (album)

Swamp is the debut and only album from English songwriter and producer Phil Thornalley.

The album was released to commercial failure, where Swamp failed to make an appearance on the American Billboard 200 Albums Chart. A total of two singles were released from the album. "Love Me Like a Rock" was released in 1988 whilst "Listen" was released in 1989, and like the album were both commercially unsuccessful.

Album title

The album's title was named after Thornalley's own private studio Swamp Studios, located in Northwest London.

Background

Largely a songwriter and producer for a wide range of musical artists, Thornalley branched into his own solo material once, aside from a stand-alone single "So This is Love" from 1983.

In Thornalley's biography on his official website, he mentions the Swamp album, stating "At the studio I would stay 'after hours' to record my own songs and was signed to MCA in the USA and made my flop solo album Swamp. By this time, my childhood friend Mike Nocito had started the group Johnny Hates Jazz and invited me to join for their second album called Tall Stories. I realized that my passion was for writing songs; not performing them."

Strand (Afrikaans for 'beach') is a seaside resort situated on the eastern edge of False Bay and at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Its geographical position is between Macassar and Gordon's Bay, and is about 50 km southeast of Cape Town. Strand is in the Western Cape province of South Africa, and has a population of approximately 50,000. Strand's main attraction is the beach; 5 km of white sandy beach off False Bay.

Strand is often referred to as The Strand (Afrikaans: Die Strand), which is the old name of the town.

    History

Strand was established as a holiday and fishing resort in 1714. In 1970, during the notorious Apartheid era, all black, coloured and Asian people were forcefully removed when the town was classified as a white-only resort. Included in the communities forced to leave at this time were the descendants of Cape Malay slaves, who had escaped from Cape Town over 100 years earlier. They lost their homes, but their mosque still stands today.

    Strand (island)

Strand was an island on the west coast of Nordfriesland in the Duchy of Schleswig, which was a fiefdom of the Danish crown. Now, the area belongs to Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany.

The island was formed by the Grote Mandrenke, a huge storm tide that occurred on January 16, 1362. Many villages and towns along the Danish coast, such as Rungholt, were lost. The island of Südfall was separated from the mainland.

In 1634, the Burchardi flood split Strand island into Nordstrand, Pellworm, and Nordstrandischmoor.
